Newark- The Delaware State Police investigated a collision on Tuesday, July 21, 2020, at approximately 3:16 a.m. that involved a tractor trailer and fully marked Delaware State Police patrol Chevrolet Tahoe.

The collision occurred on southbound John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway (I-95) just north of Churchmans Road (DE-58), Newark, DE.

At this location, I-95 is comprised of 5 thru lanes.  A gray 2014 Freightliner – 125 tractor trailer operated by a 31 year old male from Williamsburg, VA, was traveling southbound on I-95 in the 4^th lane just north of DE-58. A fully marked Delaware State Police patrol Chevrolet Tahoe was initially slowing to a stop in the 2^nd lane to assist with a collision investigation that was partially on the left shoulder. One of the vehicles involved in the crash was disabled on the right shoulder.

The fully marked patrol vehicle activated both its overhead lights and siren to alert motorist in the southbound lanes and began to merge to the right shoulder. As the patrol vehicle proceeded across the southbound lanes of travel, he traveled into the path of the fully loaded tractor-trailer. The tractor trailer attempted to change lanes but was unable to avoid the collision.

The collision resulted in both vehicles being disabled across the southbound lanes.

The Trooper assigned to Troop 6 was transported to Christiana Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.  The operator of the tractor-trailer did not sustain injuries.  Both operators were properly restrained in their vehicles.

Southbound I-95 from DE- 141 to Churchmans Road was closed for approximately three and half hours.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate this collision.
