Newark – The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian and a train that occurred this afternoon east of Newark.

The preliminary investigation has determined the incident occurred at 12:01 p.m., Saturday, August 4, 2018, on the southbound side of the railroad tracks underneath Redmill Road east of Newark.

A 22 year-old-man of Newark was standing near the right rail of the southbound rails directly underneath the Redmill Road overpass. According to the Amtrak train operator the victim was standing with his back to the Acela commuter train which was traveling southbound. It appears as though the victim was standing too close to the tracks when the train passed by and clipped the man. The victim was thrown in a southwest direction and the Acela commuter train continued south for approximately ¾ mile where it came to a stop. The train was carrying approximately 240 people. The operator on the train did not sustain any injuries and no other injuries were reported.

The victim was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Christiana Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The victim recently succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. The name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
