Date Posted: Friday, March 19th, 2021

Dover- A Smyrna man was arrested early Friday morning for traveling on the wrong side of the highway and disregarding a police officer signal.

On March 19, 2021, at approximately 2:59 a.m., troopers were dispatched to SR 1 and Scarborough Road, Dover, for a reported vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound travel lanes. Troopers located the vehicle approaching the S. Little Creek Road exit and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle in the northbound lanes of SR1.

Due to the high risk of serious injury, stop sticks were authorized and deployed by troopers in the area of Exit 88, Magnolia. The vehicle came to stop shortly thereafter and the operator, 32-year-old Darrin Swiggett of Smyrna, was taken into custody without incident.

Swiggett was transported to Troop 3 where he was charged with the following crimes:

  • Disregarding a Police Officer Signal (Felony)
  • Driving Under the Influence of a combination of Alcohol and Drugs
  • Reckless Driving
  • Driving on the Wrong Side of the Road
  • Failure to Obey Traffic Device
  • Seatbelt Violation

Swiggett’s arraignment is pending at this time.
