*UPDATE* Troopers Investigating Serious Crash U.S. 13 – Townsend

Townsend – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a serious crash that occurred at approximately 8:45 a.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at the intersection of U.S. 13 and Blackbird Landing Rd. /Pine Tree Rd., in Townsend.

The initial investigation has determined that a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan, being driven by a 37 year old Augusta, GA man, was traveling northbound on U.S. 13 in the right lane, approaching the intersection with Blackbird Landing Rd. The driver failed to stop at the red light and proceeded through the intersection, striking the left side of a 2013 Chevy Malibu, operated by a 69 year old Townsend woman that was attempting to turn left on to southbound U.S. 13. , from Blackbird Landing Rd. After the initial collision the Chevy was redirected in a northeasterly direction coming to rest at the shallow edge of a retention pond, located at the northeast corner of the intersection.

After impact, the Dodge continued in a northwesterly direction, traveling into the southbound lanes of U.S. 13 where its front end collided with the front end of a 2007 Peterbilt tractor trailer that was being driven by a 60 year old Chestertown, MD man.

The driver of the Chevy was transported to the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Peterbilt was not injured.

The driver of the Dodge, who was cited for Disregarding a Red Light, was transported to the Christiana Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

All drivers were properly restrained at the time of the crash and impairment is not being considered as a contributing factor.

All lanes of US 13 were closed for approximately 3 hours wile the scene was investigated and cleared.
