Troopers Investigating Fatal Crash – Newark

Newark – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal crash that took place late Sunday night.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:46 p.m., Sunday, August 5, 2018 at the intersection of Glasgow Avenue and Summit Bridge Road (DE 896), Newark. A 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, operated by a 26 year old Newark man was stopped at a red light in the left turn lane of Glasgow Ave., at the intersection with Summit Bridge Rd. A 2005 Honda Civic, operated by Derek R. Turner, 54, of Bear, was traveling westbound on Porter Rd., crossing over Summit Bridge Rd., to continue eastbound on Glasgow Ave. For an unknown reason the Honda drifted to the left and struck the Chevrolet head on.

Derek Turner was transported to the Christiana Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Alcohol is being considered as a contributing factor on his behalf.

The operator of the Chevrolet was treated for non-life threatening injuries. Impairment on his behalf is not being considered as a contributing factor.

Glasgow Avenue was closed for approximately 3 hours as the scene was investigated and cleared.
