State Police Investigating Two-Vehicle Fatal Crash in Wilmington

The Delaware State Police are investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred last month on West Newport Pike in Wilmington.
On August 18, 2026, a Dodge Charger was traveling westbound, in the left lane, on West Newport Pike approaching Glen Berne Drive. At the same time, a Chevrolet Colorado was turning onto West Newport Pike from Glen Berne Drive. For reasons still under investigation, the Colorado entered the Charger’s lane of travel and as a result, the Charger struck the Colorado.
The driver of the Colorado, 75-year-old Walter Howell from Wilmington, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. On September 6, 2026, he died from his injuries.
The driver of the Charger, a 25-year-old man from Wilmington, Delaware, was taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this crash. Troopers ask anyone who witnessed the collision, or has related video, to contact Senior Corporal D. McKenna by calling (302) 365-8486.
