Troopers Arrest Felony Shoplifter

Date Posted: Friday, July 28th, 2023

The Delaware State Police arrested 22-year-old Maicol Matias-Peña of Bridgeton, New Jersey after he was identified as a suspect in a felony shoplifting that occurred in late May.

On May 31, 2023, at approximately 7:05 p.m., troopers responded to the Nike Factory store, located at 36698 Bayside Outlet Drive in Rehoboth Beach, for a report of a shoplifting. Troopers arrived and learned that earlier in the afternoon two men walked into the store and hid 28 pairs of shoes inside two shopping bags. Both suspects then left the store without paying for any of the items.

On June 29, 2023, the same two suspects returned to the Nike outlet and shoplifted nine more pairs of sneakers. Altogether, the two men stole 37 pairs of shoes worth nearly $4,000.

Troopers were able to use surveillance video and images to identify Maicol Matias-Peña as one of the suspects. On July 15, Matias-Peña was taken into custody by the New Jersey State Police. He was extradited to Delaware on July 27 and taken to Troop 7, where he was charged with the following crimes:

  • Shoplifting Over $1,500 (Felony)
  • Shoplifting Under $1,500
  • Organized Retail Crime

Matias-Peña was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3 and released on $2,000 unsecured bond.
