Date Posted: Monday, May 30th, 2022

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Frederica area on Sunday afternoon.

On May 29, 2022, at approximately 5:56 p.m., a maroon 2008 Cadillac DTS was traveling westbound on Bowers Beach Road east of Skeeter Neck Road. At this time, the operator of the Cadillac crossed the double-yellow line on the roadway and attempted to pass numerous vehicles that were also traveling westbound. The Cadillac passed these vehicles in the eastbound lane of Bowers Beach Road while continuing westbound. As the Cadillac approached a white 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan traveling eastbound on Bowers Beach Road at the same location, both operators swerved into the eastbound shoulder of the roadway, resulting in a head-on collision between the vehicles.

The operator of the Cadillac, 26-year-old Dillon Satterfield of Frederica, DE, was properly restrained. He was flown via helicopter to an area hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Both the operator of the Volkswagen, a 69-year-old male and the passenger, a 69-year-old female both from Lewes, DE, were properly restrained. The driver was transported via ambulance to an area hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The passenger was transported via ambulance to an area hospital for serious injuries, where she was later pronounced deceased. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next-of-kin.

No other injuries were reported. Bowers Beach Road remained closed for approximately four hours while the investigation was being conducted.

Troopers obtained an arrest warrant for Satterfield for the following crimes:

  • Vehicular Homicide Second Degree (Felony)
  • Vehicular Assault First Degree (Felony)
  • Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
  • Reckless Driving
  • Improper Passing

Satterfield will be charged upon his release from the hospital.
