State Police Detectives Arrest Lewes Man for Attempted Murder

The Delaware State Police have arrested 31-year-old Shane Windell of Lewes, Delaware, for attempted murder and related charges following an incident at a residence in Lewes that left a woman critically injured.

On December 13, 2025, at approximately 3:10 a.m., troopers responded to a residence on the 33000 block of Tidal Way in Lewes for a check the welfare. When troopers arrived, they found a woman suffering from life-threatening physical injuries and a man, identified as Shane Windell, with serious lacerations. Troopers provided medical aid to the victim and Windell until EMS arrived, and both were taken to an area hospital. Due to the nature of the incident, Delaware State Police Troop 4 Criminal Investigations Unit assumed the investigation. The investigation revealed that during an argument, Windell, who is known by the victim, repeatedly assaulted her and prevented her from leaving. It was learned that during the incident, Windell caused serious injuries to himself.

While being treated for his injuries, Windell was found to be in violation of his probation and was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections. On December 15, 2025, he was released from the hospital, charged with the crimes listed below, arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2, and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $1,041,000 cash bond.

  • Attempt to Commit Murder 1st Degree (Felony)
  • Kidnapping First Degree, Terrorize Victim, or a Third Person – No Release (Felony)
  • Strangulation or Suffocation – Causes Serious Physical Injury to Another Person (Felony)
  • Terroristic Threatening

The Delaware State Police Troop 4 Criminal Investigations Unit continues to investigate this incident.
