On September 9, 2023, at approximately 5:19 p.m., a white 2017 Ford Escort was traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on Clapham Road, north of Sophers Row in Magnolia. At the same time, a black 2023 Mazda CX-30 was traveling northbound on Clapham Road, north of Sophers Row. The Ford came to a stop after it rolled onto its right side and violently impacted with a cluster of large trees. The Mazda spun in the roadway and came to a stop facing east in the southbound lane.
The driver of the Ford, a 63-year-old man from Magnolia, Delaware, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until his family and relatives are notified.
The driver of the Mazda, a 16-year-old girl from Milford, Delaware, was not injured. An 11-year-old passenger in the Mazda was taken by ambulance to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
