The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal collision that occurred early this morning in Bethel that left one man dead.

On July 23, 2023, at approximately 2:16 a.m., a 2017 white Ford Fiesta was traveling eastbound on Shell Bridge Road west of South Shell Bridge Road. The Ford was approaching an S-curve at an apparent high rate of speed.

After negotiating the curve, the Ford lost control and exited the south edge of the roadway. The Ford impacted with a raised embankment, which caused it to vault airborne for an unknown distance in an easterly direction. Upon impacting the ground, the Ford rolled several times before coming to a stop against the guardrail on the southeast corner of the intersection of Shell Bridge Road and South Shell Bridge Road.

The Ford’s operator, a 27-year-old man from Seaford, Delaware, was ejected from the rolling vehicle. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld until his family and relatives are notified.

The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident. Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this collision to please contact Master Corporal K. Argo by calling 302-703-3264. Information may also be provided by sending a private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police or contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
