Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in the Bridgeville area on Wednesday morning.

On May 4, 2022, at approximately 10:40 a.m., a 2002 BMW 325 operated by an 88-year-old man from Millsboro, DE, was traveling northbound on Atlanta Road, approaching the intersection at Federalsburg Road, where there is a posted stop sign. A 2011 Ford Transit van operated by a 50-year-old female from Rhodesdale, MD, was traveling eastbound on Federalsburg Road, approaching the intersection at Atlanta Road. The BMW failed to stop at the posted stop sign and proceeded northbound directly into the path of the Ford, which caused the front of the Ford van to strike the left side of the BMW. The BMW then exited the north edge of Federalsburg Road and struck a fence before coming to rest. The Ford van rotated in a counterclockwise direction and exited the north edge of Federalsburg Road before coming to rest.

Both operators were properly restrained. The driver of the Ford was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries. The driver of the BMW was transported to an area hospital for serious injuries. Unfortunately, the operator of the BMW succumbed to his injuries on May 8, 2022. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next-of-kin.
