*UPDATE-FATAL* State Troopers Investigating Serious Crash – New Castle Area

New Castle – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early this morning on Interstate 95.

Around 4:08 a.m. Wednesday October 27, 2021, a 2004 Honda Civic, operated by a 20-year-old male from Wilmington, was traveling northbound on Interstate 95 within the left center lane and was approaching the interchange with SR 141. Just south of the DelDOT yard, also known as the “Sandbox,” a 37-year-old male pedestrian from the New Castle area, was within the left shoulder area and began running out into the northbound lanes of travel in an easterly direction. The pedestrian then slowed to a walk and then stood within the left center lane of travel before being struck by the Honda Civic. The Civic came to a controlled stop on the left shoulder of Interstate 95 northbound in the area of the Sandbox.

The 37-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and was not carrying any type of lighted device.

The 20-year-old driver and a 19-year-old male passenger were both properly restrained and were transported by EMS to Christiana Medical Center where they were treated and released with minor injuries.

I95 northbound at the SR 141 interchange was closed for approximately four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into the crash. Anyone with information regarding the incident should contact Master Corporal J.
