Newark– Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a trash truck that occurred at approximately 6:13 a.m., this morning Tuesday, October 27, 2020, on Route 273.

The initial investigation has determined a 2001 Mack 600 trash truck was traveling westbound on Route 273 in the right lane, when it became disabled west of South Harmony Road due to a ruptured fuel line. A 2000 Infiniti I30 operated by a 30 year-old male from Newark, was traveling in the right lane of westbound Route 273 and failed to perceive the stopped trash truck in the roadway. The front of the Infiniti struck the rear of the trash truck.

The operator of the Infiniti who was not properly restrained was transported to Christiana Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. His name is being withheld at this time pending the notification of next of kin.

The operator of the trash truck, a 33 year-old male from Wilmington, DE, was not injured as a result of the crash.

Route 273 westbound was completely shut down for approximately 3.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) also responded and cleaned up spilled diesel fuel.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information regarding the crash should contact Det. Calio of the Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit by calling 302-365-8483.
