Date Posted: Thursday, October 15th, 2020

Bear- Delaware State Police are conducting a death investigation following a boating accident on October 15, 2020.

At approximately 11:59 a.m., DNREC Fish and Wildlife Natural Resources Police and surrounding New Castle County Fire Departments were dispatched to Lums Pond located at 3125 Red Lion Road, Bear, for a water rescue. The initial reports indicated two men had fallen out of a boat and were in the water. Upon arrival at the scene, the two men were unable to be located. Delaware State Police responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. Through investigative measures, troopers determined a 63-year-old male from Newark and a 65-year-old male acquaintance from Bear were traveling in a boat when, for unknown reasons, the two men fell in the water. A boater nearby attempted to rescue the men but was unsuccessful.

Delaware State Police Scuba Unit responded to Lums Pond to assist with the search and located both males in the water. They were pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim’s names are being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
