Superintendent Colonel William Crotty
Rehoboth Beach – The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 6:10 p.m., Friday, July 3, 2020, on Old Landing Road and Fairway Drive.
The initial investigation has determined a 2011 Mazda 6, operated by an 86-year-old Rehoboth Beach, DE woman, was traveling westbound on Old Landing Road behind a 2010 Lexus RX350 operated by a 17-year-old Camden, DE man. A vehicle traveling ahead of the Lexus slowed to turn right into Fairway Village, causing the Lexus to slow down. The Mazda 6 was following too closely and struck the rear of the Lexus within the westbound lane. After striking the Lexus, the Mazda 6 continued traveling west off the north edge of the roadway, where it struck a utility pole with the front end.
The Mazda operator was not properly restrained and was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
The operator of the Lexus and his passenger were uninjured.
Old Landing Road was closed for approximately 1 hour while the scene was investigated and cleared.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information regarding the incident should contact Sgt. A. Mendez of the Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit by calling 302- 703.3269.
