Date Posted: Friday, March 20th, 2020

Newark – The Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a serious motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 6:17 a.m., this morning, Friday, March 20, 2020, on E. Chestnut Hill Rd. at Pearson Dr., in the area of Todd Estates.

The initial investigation has determined that a 2003 Chevy Cavalier, operated by a 66 year old Newark woman, was traveling eastbound on E. Chestnut Hill Rd. (Rt. 4) in the right lane, proceeding towards the intersection with Pearson Dr. A 2014 Acura MDX, operated by a 55 year old Elkton, MD woman, was traveling eastbound on E. Chestnut Hill Rd. in the left lane, behind the Chevy. The Acura accelerated past the Chevy at which time the Chevy then changed lanes to follow behind the Acura. The Chevy then proceeded to drift to the left into the center grass before returning to the left lane at which time it accelerated and struck the rear of the Acura.

After the initial impact the driver of the Chevy lost control with her vehicle overturning on to its roof, coming to rest in the middle of the intersection. The Acura also came to rest in the intersection.

The driver of the Chevy who was not properly restrained was transported to the Christiana Hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the Acura, who was properly restrained, was not injured.

Impairment does not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash.

Traffic on E. Chestnut Hill Rd. was restricted for approximately 3 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
