Troopers Investigating Attempted Carjacking – Newark

Newark – The Delaware State Police are investigating an attempted carjacking that took place in the parking lot of a Newark area shopping center in which the suspect identified himself as a law enforcement officer.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 13, 2020 in the parking lot of the Salem Village Square Shopping Center, Newark. A 20 year old male had just exited a business and was seated in his vehicle in the lot when a dark colored vehicle pulled up. A male suspect exited the vehicle, approached the victim and identified himself as a law enforcement officer. The suspect then advised the victim that he needed to take his vehicle. The victim refused at which time the suspect produced a handgun. Upon seeing the weapon the victim drove off. The suspect never specified an agency nor produced any credentials. The victim was not injured as a result of the incident.

The suspect was described as a black male, 5’8”-5’10’ tall, average build, and in possession of a handgun.
