Date Posted: Saturday, December 28th, 2019

Newark – The Delaware State Police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 8:47 p.m., Friday, December 27, 2019 on southbound I-95, just south of the Salem Church Rd. overpass.

The initial investigation has determined that a 2017 Jeep Wrangler, operated by a 28 year old Middletown woman, was traveling southbound I-95 in the right lane when for an undetermined reason she proceeded off the right side of the road, onto the shoulder, where the front right of her vehicle struck the left rear of a car carrier trailer that was parked on the shoulder.

After impacting the trailer the Jeep overturned and continued in a southerly direction, at which time it collided with a 2014 Toyota Prius and a 2019 Nissan Sentra, both of which were traveling I-95 southbound.

After being struck by the Jeep, both the Toyota and the Nissan came to a controlled stop on the I-95 southbound, right shoulder. The Jeep came to rest in the I-95 southbound right lane of travel.

The driver of the Jeep, who was properly restrained was transported to the Christiana Hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the Toyota, a 34 year old Middletown woman, who was properly restrained, was not injured.

The driver of the Nissan, a 54 year old man from France, who was properly restrained, also was not injured.

The car carrier trailer was unoccupied.

Three lanes of I-95 southbound were closed for approximately 4.5 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
