*UPDATE* Troopers Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash – New Castle

New Castle – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred earlier this morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 6:44 a.m., Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at the intersection of New Castle Avenue (Rt. 9) and Ryan Avenue, New Castle. A Colonial School District school bus stopped on southbound New Castle Ave. at the north corner of the intersection with Ryan Ave. The bus which was on-loading students at the bus stop had its red flashing lights activated. A 37 year old Wilmington man was attempting to cross the southbound lanes of New Castle Ave. on foot, while the bus was stopped. A 2007 Honda Accord, operated by a 55 year old Wilmington man, was travelling southbound in the left lane of New Castle Ave. approaching the intersection with Ryan Ave. The driver failed to stop for the school bus lights and in turn struck the pedestrian as he crossed the roadway. The pedestrian was thrown to the roadway and came to rest in the left lane, south of the point of the collision. The Honda came to a controlled stop on the right shoulder.

The pedestrian, who was wearing dark, non-reflective clothing, not carrying a light and not utilizing a marked crosswalk was pronounced deceased at the scene. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

The operator of the Honda was not injured. Impairment on his behalf is undetermined at this time.
