Date Posted: Tuesday, September 24th, 2019

Lewes-  The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a crash involving a pedal cyclist that has turned fatal.

The incident occurred on September 11, 2019 at approximately 12:31 p.m., when a 2017 Cadillac CTS was traveling in the right lane of northbound Coastal Highway (SR1) approaching the intersection of a single directional access road leading to Kings Highway (SR9). A pedal cyclist, was operating a light blue bicycle in the bus/bike lane of northbound Coastal Highway directly to the right of the Cadillac. For unknown reasons, the operator of the Cadillac failed to see the bicycle and changed lanes to the right in order to turn onto Kings Highway. While changing lanes, the right side of the Cadillac struck the bicycle within the bus/bike lane, causing the pedal cyclist to be ejected.

The operator of the Cadillac, an 89-year-old male from Millsboro, DE was not injured and remained on scene.

The pedal cyclist, 79-year-old Lloyd Kirby Jr., of Lewes, DE was wearing a helmet.  He was transported to the Christina Hospital and on September 23, 2019 he succumbed to his injuries.

Northbound Coastal Highway was rendered to a single travel lane for approximately 1.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and no charges have been filed at this time.
