Troopers Investigating Serious Crash Involving a Motorcycle – Claymont

Claymont, Delaware – The Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash involving a motorcycle that took place on (U.S. 13) Philadelphia Pike north of Myrtle Avenue this afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:16 p.m., Sunday, July 28, 2019, on Philadelphia Pike northbound north of Myrtle Avenue, Claymont.  A 2005 Mercury Marquis, operated by a 77-year-old male of New Castle, was traveling southbound on Philadelphia Pike in the left lane north of Myrtle Avenue. The Marquis began to make a left turn across the northbound lanes of Philadelphia Pike into the parking lot of the Exxon at 3700 Philadelphia Pike. A 2016 Yamaha Sport motorcycle, operated by a 30-year-old male of Claymont, was traveling northbound on Philadelphia Pike in the right lane just north of Myrtle Avenue. The motorcycle struck the right front passenger side door of the Marquis. The motorcycle operator was ejected.

The motorcycle operator was wearing a helmet and was removed from the scene by the Delaware State Police Aviation helicopter to the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Mercury was not injured in the crash and was cited for Vehicle Turning Left Must Yield Right of Way to Oncoming Traffic.

Philadelphia Pike was shut down in both directions for approximately 1.5 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
