Middletown, Delaware – The Delaware State Police is currently investigating a serious crash involving multiple vehicles on SR-1 which occurred Friday afternoon.
The initial investigation has determined the incident occurred on Friday, June 21, 2019, at approximately 2:40 p.m. when a 2016 Jeep Wrangler, operated by a 52-year-old male of Pennsylvania, was traveling southbound in the left lane of SR-1. The operator of the Jeep was almost at a standstill due to the traffic conditions when a 2001 GMC Yukon, operated by a 76-year-old of Pennsylvania, was also in the left lane behind the Jeep. The Yukon was rear-ended by a 2018 Chevrolet Suburban, operated by a 51-year-old male of Pennsylvania, causing the GMC Yukon to become airborne, roll over, and then spin several times before striking the rear right side of the Jeep Wrangler.
The 52-year-old driver of the Jeep Wrangler did not report any injuries.
The 76-year-old driver of the GMC Yukon sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the Christiana Hospital. His passenger, a 77-year-old female, sustained serious injuries and was transported by the DSP Aviation Unit to the Christiana Hospital.
The 51-year-old driver of the Suburban and his 57-year-old female passenger did not report any injuries. The driver advised the traffic stopped abruptly in front of him and he swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision. This driver was issued a citation for Following a Motor Vehicle Too Closely.
The impact of the crash impacted traffic flow for several hours until the crash was investigated and cleared.
