Troopers Investigating Serious Crash Involving a Pedestrian – New Castle

New Castle – The Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash involving a pedestrian that took place on Basin Rd. in the area of the Penn Mart Shopping Center, Thursday night.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:46 p.m., Thursday, June 20, 2019 on Basin Rd. (DE 141), south of the U.S. 13 overpass. A 2008 Honda Civic, operated by a 30 year old Newark man was traveling southbound on Basin Rd. in the left lane in the area of the Penn Mart Shopping Center. A 73 year old Wilmington was attempting cross Basin Rd. and walked directly into the path of the Honda. After being struck by the front end of the Honda the pedestrian was thrown to the pavement. The Honda came to a controlled stop and remained at the scene.

The pedestrian, who was wearing non-reflective clothing, carrying no light and not utilizing a pedestrian crosswalk was transported to the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries. Alcohol is being considered as a contributing factor on his behalf.

The driver of the Honda was not injured. Neither improper driving nor impairment are being considered as factors on his behalf.

Southbound Basin Rd. between US 13 and the Penn Mart Shopping Center was closed for approximately 2.5 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
