Middletown- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred earlier this evening.

The incident occurred on April 13, 2019 at approximately 7:57 p.m., when a marked fire truck, was traveling northbound on US 301, north of Bunker Hill Road.  The fire truck was responding to the area to assist on a previous collision that involved injuries and had all of its emergency lights activated.  It was reported that the operator of the fire truck had just applied the air brake and the truck was stopped, when it was struck from behind by a 2009 Acura TL that was also traveling northbound on US 301.

The operator of the fire truck, a 34-year-old male from Middletown was properly restrained and declined treatment at the scene.

The operator of the Acura, a 57-year-old male from Wilmington was properly restrained and pronounced deceased at the scene.  His name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Northbound US 301, north of Bunker Hill Road was closed for  approximately 2 ½ hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
