Troopers Investigating Fatal Crash -Dover

Dover (19901)–  The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a single vehicle crash that has turned fatal.

The incident occurred on March 7, 2019 at approximately 10:36 a.m., when a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling northbound on Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway (SR 1) north of the Exit 93 northbound on Ramp. The Malibu was traveling in the right lane and attempted to change lanes and enter the dedicated exit/entry lane. For unknown reasons, the operator turned abruptly to the left and back into the right lane of travel.  The vehicle proceeded to cross over the left lane into a paved median, where it struck concrete jersey barrier that was separating the north and southbound lanes.

The operator, 95-year-old George F. Thompson of Dover was properly restrained and responsive on scene.  He was transported to the Bayhealth Kent General hospital where he later succumb to his injuries on March 11, 2019.

The roadway was closed for approximately 2 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The accident continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.
