Frankford- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a serious crash that occurred last evening.

The incident occurred on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at approximately 9:32 p.m. when a 1999 Pontiac Firebird was disabled with no lights and stopped in the southbound lane in an unlit area of Shell Station Road south of Hastings Road. After becoming disabled, the occupants called an acquaintance who was at a residence nearby to assist them. While waiting for assistance, the operator exited the vehicle and was standing along the edge of the road. The owner of the vehicle, who was originally a right front passenger also exited the vehicle and was attempting to work on and restart the vehicle. A third passenger remained in the vehicle and was seated in the rear seat.

A 2014 Mazda MZ3 left a residence north of the scene and began to travel southbound on Shell Station Road.  As the Mazda approached, the operator failed to observe the Firebird disabled in the road and struck the rear of the vehicle and one of the occupants that was outside of the vehicle.

The operator of the Firebird, a 17 year-old male from Frankford, DE who was outside of the vehicle at the time of the crash was not injured.

The operator of the Mazda, a 19-year-old male from Millsboro, DE was transported to the Peninsula Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.  He was not properly restrained and impairment appears to be a factor on his behalf.

The rear seat passenger in the Firebird, a 20 year-old female from Georgetown, DE was not properly restrained and was transported to the Peninsula Regional Medical Center and later transferred to the Baltimore Shock Trauma Center in serious condition.

The passenger who was outside of the Firebird, a 22-year-old male from Selbyville, DE was transported to the Christiana Hospital in serious condition.

The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours while the investigation was conducted and the roadway was cleared.  The crash continues to remain under investigation.
