Passenger Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Multi-vehicle Crash

Newark– The Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a multi-vehicle crash that has claimed the life of Virgilio Sui, 79, of Wilmington, who was a passenger in one of the vehicles.

The crash originally occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m., Friday, October 5, 2018 on Ogletown-Stanton Rd. (DE Rt. 4), at the intersection with Churchman’s Rd. (DE Rt. 58) and Delaware Park Blvd.

A 1995 Ford Escort was stopped in a line of traffic in the eastbound left lane of Ogletown-Stanton Rd., prior to Churchman’s Rd. A 2012 Toyota Tundra was stopped at the red light in the left turn lane of eastbound Ogletown-Stanton Rd., waiting to turn onto Delaware Park Blvd. A 2000 Honda Accord was stopped in front of the Escort at the red light. A 2014 Nissan Pathfinder was turning left on to westbound Ogletown-Stanton Rd. from Churchman’s Rd. A 2009 Honda Civic was traveling eastbound on Ogletown-Stanton Rd. approaching the intersection with Churchman’s Rd.

The Civic began to travel in between the left turn and left thru lane of eastbound Ogletown-Stanton Rd., at which time it struck the left rear of the Escort, the right rear of the Tundra and then the left rear of the Accord in succession. After the third impact the Civic continued in to the intersection against the red light and struck the left side of the Pathfinder which was proceeding with its left turn.

All operators with the exception of the driver of the Tundra, who was not injured, were transported to the Christiana Hospital with various, non-life threatening injuries. A passenger in the Pathfinder was also transported for non-life threatening injuries. Virgilio Sui was originally transported with suspected non-life threatening injuries however on October 10, 2018 he was pronounced deceased due to complications from injuries sustained in the crash.

All subjects involved in the crash were properly restrained and impairment was not considered as a contributing factor.

The operator of the Civic, 63 year old Jane Emery of Newark was charged at the time of the incident with Reckless Driving, Failure to Maintain a Lane of Travel, Failure to Stop at a Red Light, Failure to Signal, Unreasonable Speed, and No Proof of Insurance.

As a result of the Virgilio Sui’s death the Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit has assumed the investigation.
