Traffic Stop Leads to Drug and Weapon Arrest – Dover

Dover- The Delaware State Police have arrested a Virginia man after a traffic stop led to the discovery of drugs and a weapon.

The incident occurred on Friday, August 24, 2018 at approximately 1:45 a.m. when a trooper observed a maroon Hyundai sedan traveling southbound on South State Street north of Webbs Lane in the right turn lane. The vehicle abruptly changed lanes without using its turn signal. Trooper then activated emergency equipment and made contact with the operator, identified as Stevie Cornwell. A computer check revealed his Virginia driver license was suspended. An adult female passenger and their child was located in the vehicle. The child was in a car seat, however was not properly secured in the child restraint seat.

During the traffic stop, a strong odor of marijuana was detected coming from the occupant compartment of the vehicle and a search of the vehicle yielded a loaded handgun. The handgun had a fully loaded magazine with one round in the chamber. There was approximately 133 grams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia also located. Approximately $800.00 in suspected drug proceeds were located in the vehicle. The Division of Family Services was contacted for the child. A computer check revealed Cornwell has a prior possession of a firearm and drug dealing charges.

Stevie S. Cornwell, 26 of Hampton, Virginia was transported to Troop 3 and charged with:

  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
  • Manufactures, delivers, or PWID a controlled substance w/ an aggravating factor
  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon A Firearm
  • Possess, Purchase, Own or Control a D/Weapon A Semi Auto or Auto By Person Prohibit
  • Endangering the Welfare of a Child Intentionally Knowingly Recklessly Act
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia Not Related to Personal Use Qty Marijuana or Person
  • Driving Without a Valid License
  • No Person Shall Turn or Move a Vehicle without giving proper Signal
  • Child Under 8 and < 65 lbs or Child 8 to 15 or > 65 lbs must be in Child Restraint

Stevie S. Cornwell was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court #7 and committed to the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in default of $59,303.00 secured bond.
