Troopers Arrest Three Suspects for Burglary- Georgetown

Georgetown- The Delaware State Police have arrested three suspects in connection with a burglary that occurred in late July 2018.

The incident occurred on July 21, 2018, at approximately 5:27 a.m., when Troopers were dispatched to Old Furnace Road for a report of a burglary.  Upon arrival, contact was made with a 95-year-old female victim who advised she was awoke in the middle of the night by a person standing in the doorway to her bedroom.  As the victim proceeded out of her bedroom, she encountered a second suspect and both immediately fled.

Further investigation revealed that several items were missing from her residence.  It was discovered that the suspects had entered the victim’s residence by prying open a window on the screen in porch, causing damage to the screen and frame. The suspects removed two rifles, a set of spoons, the victim’s credit and debit cards, a jar of change, a jewelry box with assorted jewelry, and her emergency medical alert transponder.

Through investigative measures, Troopers were able to identify, three suspects, 27-year-old Ethan A. Mulford of Seaford, 27-year-old Mark J. Smith Jr. of Georgetown, and 32-year-old Matthew R. King Jr. of Laurel.

On Tuesday, August 7, 2018 Ethan Mulford responded to Troop 4 where he turned himself in without incident and was charged with the following:

  • Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony
  • Burglary First Degree
  • Possession or Control of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person
    Prohibited
  • Possession of Burglar Tools
  • Theft of a Firearm (2 counts)
  • Theft Under $1500 Where a Victim is 62 Years of Age or Older
  • Conspiracy Second Degree
  • Theft By False Pretense
  •  Falsifying Business Records
  • Selling Stolen Property
  • Criminal Mischief

Mulford was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $106,100.00 secured bond. 

On Tuesday, August 7, 2018, Mark J. Smith Jr. was taken into custody at his residence on Old Furnace Road without incident.  Smith was transported to Troop 4 where he was charged with the following:

  • Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony
  • Burglary First Degree
  • Possession of Burglar Tools
  • Theft of a Firearm (2 counts)
  • Theft Under $1500 Where a Victim is 62 Years of Age or Older
  • Conspiracy Second Degree
  • Theft By False Pretense
  • Falsifying Business Records
  • Selling Stolen Property
  • Criminal Mischief

Smith was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $14,200.00 secured bond.

On Tuesday, August 7, 2018, Matthew R. King Jr. was taken into custody at his residence on Oak Street in Laurel without incident.  He was transported back to Troop 4 where he was charged with the following:

  • Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony
  • Burglary First Degree
  • Possession or Control of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Person
    Prohibited
  • Possession of Burglar Tools
  • Theft of a Firearm (2 counts)
  • Theft Under $1500 Where a Victim is 62 Years of Age or Older
  • Conspiracy Second Degree
  • Criminal Mischief  Under $1000

King was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $103,100.00 cash only bond.
