Georgetown – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal crash that occurred at approximately 2:46 p.m., Saturday, July 21, 2018 on W. Piney Grove Rd., south of E. Trap Pond Rd., Georgetown.

The initial investigation has determined that a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, operated by a 63 year old Georgetown man, was traveling northbound on W. Piney Grove Rd., approximately .4 miles south of E. Trap Pond Rd., when for an unknown reason he traveled off the right edge of the roadway onto a grassy area. The Chevrolet re-entered the roadway and traveled across the center line into the opposing lane of travel, directly in to the path of a 2006 Jeep Cherokee, operated by a 53 year old Georgetown woman. The operator of the Jeep was unable to avoid the Chevrolet, resulting in the vehicles colliding in the southbound lane of travel.

The operator of the Chevrolet, who was unrestrained, was trapped in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Identification is pending the notification of next of kin.

The operator of the Jeep, who was properly restrained, was transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for approximately 3 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact Sgt. A. Mendez at Troop 7 by calling 302-703-3269.
