Troopers Investigating Head On Collision- State Route 1 Middletown

SR 1 at Pole Bridge

Middletown – Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash involving a wrong way driver on State Route 1 in Middletown, that has sent three people to the hospital.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:09 a.m., Saturday, May 19, 2018, on State Route 1 in the area of Pole Bridge Road, Middletown. A 2006 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by a 24 year old Wilmington woman, was traveling SR 1 southbound in the northbound lanes of travel, north of the Roth Bridge. The Chevrolet continued southbound in the northbound lanes, crossing the bridge and proceeding through the Biddles Toll Plaza.

A 2016 Nissan Pathfinder, being driven by a 39 year old Concord, North Carolina woman was traveling SR 1 northbound in the left lane, just north of the Pole Bridge Road interchange, following behind another vehicle. As the Chevrolet approached, the lead vehicle was able to swerve out of the way to avoid a collision, however the Nissan was unable to do so and was struck head on.

The operator of the Chevrolet who was properly restrained, was transported to the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries. Impairment is being considered as a factor on her behalf.

A 41 year old Concord, North Carolina man, who was a passenger in the Nissan and not wearing a seatbelt, was also transported to the Christiana Hospital with serious injuries.

SR 1 northbound in the area of Pole Bridge Road was closed for approximately 2 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact Cpl. J. Breen of the Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit at 302-365-8486.
