Troopers Investigating Fatal Crash-North Wilmington

Date Posted: Friday, March 9th, 2018

Silverside Rd.

Wilmington – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred overnight.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:02 a.m., Friday, March 9, 2018, on Silverside Road, between Veale Road and Grinnell Road, Wilmington.

A 2007 Honda Civic, being driven by a 33 year old Wilmington man, was travelling Silverside Road eastbound from the area of Veale Road at an apparent high rate of speed, when he encountered an icy portion of roadway. The Honda began to rotate counter clockwise, crossing into the Silverside Road, westbound lane of travel, directly into the path of a 2011 Hyundai Sonata, operated by a 33 year old Wilmington man. The front end of the Hyundai struck the passenger side of the Honda, forcing it to overturn onto its roof.

The operator of the Honda who was unrestrained, was pronounced dead at the scene. Speed does appear to be a factor in the crash, impairment on his behalf is unknown at this time.

The operator of the Hyundai who was properly restrained, along with a passenger in his vehicle were admitted to the Christiana Hospital in critical condition. Impairment is not being considered as a factor on behalf of the driver.

Identification of the victim is pending notification of next of kin.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Cpl. J. Breen of the Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit by calling 302-365-8486.
