Rehoboth Beach– The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred on Friday, December 22, 2017 on Airport Road (CR 275A) at Old Landing Road (CR 274).
The incident occurred on Friday, December 22, 2017 at approximately 7:06 p.m., as a 62-year-old Rehoboth Beach man was operating a 2008 Honda Accord traveling northbound on Airport Road approaching the intersection at Old Landing Road. For unknown reasons, the operator failed to stop at the posted stop sign. The vehicle crossed over Old Landing Road and subsequently struck a State Highway warning sign and a tree before coming to a rest. The operator of the Honda left his vehicle and fled the scene prior to police arrival.
The 62-year-old operator of the Honda was later identified as Lawrence E. Cassidy Sr. of Rehoboth Beach. On Saturday, December 23, 2017 Cassidy had collapsed at his residence and was unable to be revived by EMS, at which time he was pronounced dead at approximately 10:37 a.m. An autopsy was later conducted by the State of Delaware Medical Examiner’s office and concluded that Cassidy died as a result of his injuries which he sustained in the collision.
It is unknown at this time if impairment is a contributing factor in this crash.
