Frederica – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:07 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2017 on Bay Rd. (SR 1) southbound, just north of S. Frederica Rd. A 2004 Nissan Altima, being driven by a 33 year old Milford man was traveling Bay Rd. southbound in the right lane approaching S. Frederica Rd. A 54 year old Milford woman was running in a north-easterly direction across the southbound lanes of Bay Rd., directly into the path of the Nissan. The operator of the Nissan observed the pedestrian and swerved left to avoid striking her but was unable to do so. The victim was struck by the front right bumper of the Nissan and thrown into the southbound left lane, where she was then struck by an unknown tractor trailer which continued southbound without stopping. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Nissan came to a controlled stop in the median, south of the collision and remained at the scene. The operator of the Nissan was properly restrained and was uninjured as a result of the crash.

The victim was wearing all dark clothing none of which was reflective, and was not carrying a light. Alcohol is being considered as a factor on her behalf. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Bay Rd. southbound in the area of S. Frederica Rd. was closed for approximately 5 hours.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing it’s investigation into the crash and further details will be released as they become available.
