New Castle – Delaware State Police continue to investigate a multi-vehicle crash which occurred this morning near New Castle.

The initial investigation has determined that the crash occurred at approximately 8:39 a.m. this morning, Friday, July 7, 2016, as Nicholas Antalik, 30, of Brooklyn, CT, was operating a 2012 Peterbuilt tractor and trailer and was traveling in the left hand westbound lane of I-295 just prior to the northbound I-495 split. The front of the tractor trailer then struck the rear of a 2012 Mercedes-Benz E350, which was stopped in traffic in the left hand lane, and which was being operated by a 62-year-old Baldwin, MD man. The force of the initial crash caused the Mercedes to travel forward where its front then struck the rear of a 2017 Chevrolet Cruz which was being operated by a 21-year-old Woodstown, NJ woman. The Cruz then flipped onto its right hand side and caught on fire as it was pushed forward. Its front end then struck the rear of a 2016 Chrysler Town and Country, which had been stopped in the left hand lane, and which was being operated by a 40-year-old Swedesboro, NJ woman. The Town and Country then traveled forward where it then struck the rear of a 2012 Lexus IS, which had been stopped in the left hand lane, and which was being operated by a 53-year-old Sewell, NJ woman. The Town and Country then entered into the right hand lane where it was sideswiped by an unknown make and model tractor and trailer, which had originally stopped but then fled the scene.

The operators of the Town and Country, the Chevrolet Cruz, and the Mercedes-Benz were all treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics before being transported to the Christiana Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Nicholas Antalik, who was not injured, was cited by troopers with Following Too Closely.

The westbound lanes of I-295 were partially closed for approximately 1.5 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
