Troopers Investigating Serious Crash – Wilmington

Wilmington, DE- Delaware State Police continue to investigate a four vehicle crash in which three people were injured that occurred early this afternoon in Wilmington.

The investigation has determined that the crash occurred at approximately 12:38 p.m. this afternoon, Monday, June 27, 2016, as Scott Masotti, 25, of Tannersville, PA, was operating a 2016 Nissan Sentra and was traveling in the right hand lane of southbound I-95 just south of Maryland Avenue, Wilmington. As Masotti observed traffic slowing in front of him, he made a left hand lane change into the center lane of the highway where traffic was also slowing. Masotti then attempted to enter the left hand lane, however, the front of his vehicle struck the rear of a 2004 Honda Civic which was slowing in the center lane, and which was being operated by Rosario Velazquez-Flores, 18, of Wilmington. After the impact the Honda spun in a counter-clockwise direction and then struck the side of Masotti’s vehicle before leaving the left hand side of the roadway. The Honda then struck a metal guardrail before coming to rest. The Sentra spun in a counter-clockwise direction and struck the rear of a 2013 Buick Verano which was stopped in the center lane of the highway, and which was being operated by Nancy B. Senior, 74, of Wilmington. It then continued is a southbound direction where it then struck the rear of a 2008 Ford Fusion which was also stopped in the center lane of the highway and which was being operated by Eric Petka, 31, of Wilmington. The Nissan then came to rest in the roadway. Nancy Senior and Eric Petka were able to bring their vehicles to a controlled stop in the left hand lane of the highway just south of the collision scene.

Rosario Velazquez-Flores, Nancy Senior, and a 68 year old female passenger in her vehicle, were all treated at the scene by New Castle County Paramedics before being transported by EMS to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center where they were treated for their injuries.

Eric Petka and Scott Masotti were not injured. Masotti was cited by Troopers with Reckless Driving, Inattentive Driving, Inappropriate Speed, and Making an Improper Lane Change.

The southbound lanes of I-95 were closed for approximately 2 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

Wilmington, DE- Delaware State Police are currently investigating a multi-vehicle crash which occurred early this afternoon in Wilmington.

The initial investigation has determined that the crash occurred at approximately 12:38 p.m. today, Monday, June 27, 2016, on southbound I-95 in the area of Maryland Avenue. As a result of the crash, one person has been removed from the scene and transported to the Christiana Hospital Trauma Center with serious injuries. It is unknown at this time if there were any other injuries.

All lanes of southbound I-95 have been closed at this time, although traffic is getting by on the shoulder. The left hand lane of northbound I-95 has also been closed. Commuters are asked to find alternate routes of travel around the crash scene.

The investigation into this crash is in its early stages. More information will be released at the conclusion of the investigation.
