Pennsylvania Man Arrested on Gun Charge During Traffic Stop

Date Posted: Thursday, September 21st, 2023

Delaware State Police arrested 28-year-old Devin Butler, of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, for carrying a concealed deadly weapon during a traffic stop yesterday morning.

On September 20, 2023, at approximately 12:05 a.m., the New Castle County Governor’s Task Force observed an Infiniti sedan with Pennsylvania registration while patrolling the area of New Castle Avenue. A computer inquiry of the vehicle’s registration revealed that the license plate was fictitious and belonged to a Ford. Additionally, the Infiniti was driving over the speed limit, going at a rate in excess of 60 mph in a 45-mph zone. The troopers activated their emergency lights and sirens at the intersection of New Castle Avenue and Lambson Lane to pull the vehicle over. After being given multiple commands to stop, Butler abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Troopers began chasing Butler while giving additional commands for him to stop, but he continued to flee onto Lambson Lane. Troopers then observed him reach into his hooded jacket as he was running and toss what appeared to be a firearm. Butler attempted to jump over a fence but was tased. After being tased, he continued to resist and was taken into custody after a brief struggle. Troopers located a loaded firearm in close proximity to Butler. He was transported to Troop 2, where he was charged with the following crimes:

  • Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon (Felony)
  • Hindering Prosecution (Felony)
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Traffic-related offenses

Butler was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $5200 secured bond.
