Date Posted: Saturday, May 2nd, 2020

Newark – The Delaware State Police have arrested 48-year-old Daniel L. Kopec of Delaware City, on multiple felony charges, stemming from a domestic-related assault that occurred Friday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m., May 1, 2020, on Christiana Rd, Newark. Kopec and his 45-year-old wife were traveling in Kopec’s vehicle when the two became engaged in a verbal dispute. Kopec became angry, and Kopec pulled out an approximately 4-inch folding knife and stabbed her in the abdominal area, causing a visible physical injury that was bleeding. Kopec then drove the victim to his residence in Delaware City. When Kopec fell asleep at approximately 4:45 p.m., the victim walked from the residence to the Delaware City Police Department for help. She was immediately transported to Christiana Hospital for treatment, in serious condition.

A computer inquiry revealed there is currently an active court order in place for Kopec to have no contact with the victim.

Troopers located Kopec at his residence on May 2, 2020, and took him into custody without incident. He was transported to Troop 2 where he was charged with the following crimes:

  • Assault 1st Degree (felony)
  • Possession of a Deadly Weapon during the Commission of a Felony (felony)
  • Criminal Contempt of a Domestic Violence Protective Order (felony)
