Joint Investigation Leads to Multiple Drug and Weapon Charges

Kent/Sussex County- The Delaware State Police Kent and Sussex County Drug Units with the assistance of the Dover Police Department, Milford Police Department, Sussex Governor’s Task Force (GTF), Special Operations Response Team (SORT), U.S. Marshals Task Force, and the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) concluded a joint investigation into the distribution of illegal drugs.

On February 13, 2020, the joint investigation concluded into the illegal drug distribution with the arrest of Roberto Cantu, 41, of Lincoln and Mario J. Garza, 54 of Milford.  Through investigations, it was learned that Cantu and Garza were working together and responsible for distributing large amounts of cocaine and marijuana in the Kent and Sussex County areas.  A search warrant was obtained for Cantu’s residence located in the 300 block of Cedar Drive, Lincoln, and Garza’s residence in the unit block of Nailor Street, Milford.

Upon the execution of the search warrant at the residence on Nailor Street, the following was located:

  • approximately 69.51 grams of powder cocaine
  • approximately 104.36 grams of marijuana
  • (57) Acxion 30 mg pills (schedule IV)
  • .22 caliber handguns (2)
  •  .45 caliber handgun
  • 9mm handgun
  • 12 gauge shotguns (2)
  •  .50 caliber rifle
  • Over $35,000.00 in suspected drug proceeds
  • Various rounds of ammunition

Upon the execution of the search warrant at the residence on Cedar Drive, the following was located:

  • approximately 371.44 grams of cocaine
  • approximately 1,290.81 grams of marijuana
  • 9mm handguns (2)
  • 12 gauge shotgun
  • 203 rounds of 9mm ammunition
  • Over $11,000.00 in suspected drug proceeds

Garza was taken into custody as he was observed exiting the Wal-Mart in Milford without incident.  Cantu was taken into custody at his residence on Cedar Drive without incident.  Both were transported back to Troop 4 where they were charged with the following:

Mario Garza:

  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited
  • Possession of Ammunition by a Person Prohibited
  • Possession With Intent To Deliver Cocaine in a Tier 3 Quantity
  • Possession With Intent To Deliver a Controlled Substance
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Additionally, Garza was wanted by Homeland Security and had an immigration warrant on file due to being deported previously and returning to the U.S.

Garza was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $131000.00 secured bond.

Roberto Cantu:

  • Possession With Intent To Deliver a Controlled Substance Tier 3 Quantity
  • Possession With Intent To Deliver a  Controlled Substance
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited Who Also Possesses Controlled Substance (2 counts)

Cantu was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $61000.00 secured bond.

The success of this investigation demonstrates the collaborative efforts between all of the agencies involved and their commitment to reduce violent crime and drug trafficking within our communities.
