Laurel– The Delaware State Police have arrested 23-year-old Carlos B. Chavez-Mendez for assault and related charges.

The incident occurred on January 26, 2020 at approximately 6:16 a.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the 10000 block of Cherry Street, Laurel Village, Laurel, for a domestic related assault complaint.  Upon arrival, Troopers met with an 18-year-old female victim at the entrance to the development.  The victim advised that her boyfriend, Carlos B. Chavez-Mendez had returned home around 3:00 a.m., and began arguing and physically assaulting her with a belt.  The victim advised that Chavez-Mendez would not allow her to leave and prohibited her from accessing her phone to call for help.  During this incident, Chavez-Mendez’s 17-year-old relative was present in the residence.  The victim was eventually able to leave and call 911.

The victim sustained numerous visible injuries and was transported to a local area hospital where she was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers made contact with Chavez-Mendez who was still inside the residence.  He was taken into custody without incident and transported back to Troop 5 where he was charged with the following:

  • Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony
  •  Assault Second Degree
  •  Aggravated Menacing
  • Unlawful Imprisonment First Degree
