Newark – The Delaware State Police have arrested a Newark man for possession of ammunition and a crossbow after it was determined he was federally prohibited.

The investigation began on Thursday February 23, 2017 when troopers responded to a residence in the 1000 block of South College Road for a report of someone shooting at their residence.  The residents of the home heard a popping noise the previous day (Wednesday February 22, 2017) while in the first floor bathroom and then again Thursday when damage was observed to a window and the bathroom wall.  A similar incident was reported from the same household back on November 14, 2016 when a small caliber round was located in the wall of the first floor bathroom.

While conducting the investigation into the most recent events, detectives were able to determine that the projectiles came from a residence located in the 800 block of Cobble Creek Curve which is across both lanes of South College Avenue (SR896).  Detectives also located a paper shooting target on a berm just outside the residence, when if a round was fired too high, no other structures, residences, or cars would obstruct the path of the projectile and it would cross SR896, striking the victim’s house.

A computer inquiry into the homeowner, who was identified as Drew R. Chicklo, 31, revealed he was federally prohibited from owning any firearms due to an August 2013 conviction of Unlawful to Receive a Firearm Not Registered.

On Friday February 24, 2017 around 1:08 p.m., detectives with the assistance of the Delaware State Police Special Operations Response Team, the New Castle County Police, and ATF, executed a search warrant at the residence in the 800 block of Cobble Creek Curve and took Drew Chicklo into custody without incident.  Upon conducting a search of his residence, detectives located an empty rifle magazine and another rifle magazine loaded with .22 caliber rounds.  There were also numerous spent .22 caliber shell casings in a rear second floor bedroom, a crossbow with bolts, a hunting rifle scope, a hunting knife, and a machete.  It was also determined through the investigation that Chicklo’s Delmarva Power service had been terminated in July of 2016 after he failed to pay his bill.  He then tampered with the electrical box in order to restore his power and acquire an unknown amount of power usage.  According to Delmarva Power, the estimated minimum amount of $1,800.00 worth of electricity was stolen during that time period.

Drew Chicklo was transported back to Troop 2 where he was charged with Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Person Prohibited (Felony), Theft of Services (Felony), and Non-Compliance with Conditions of a Bond (Felony) after he and his ex-fiancé were seen together at his house the night of the 23rd knowing that there was a Protection From Abuse order in place.  Chicklo was arraigned at JP2 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $35,000.00 cash bond.
