Community Partners Prepare for Hurricane Florence

Our thoughts are with your communities as you prepare for the potential impact of Hurricane Florence. The Delaware State Police will continue to closely monitor Hurricane Florence and work with our state partners for your safety. We also hope our partnership with Nextdoor.com will be a helpful resource for you over the next few days. Delaware State Police on Nextdoor.com

As Delaware prepares for the impending storm of Hurricane Florence, we encourage all residents to prepare now by taking the following precautions:

-Ensure you have food, water, and medications for each person in your home for seven days.

-Be ready for power, utility, and phone service outages. Keep your mobile phones charged.

-Refill your gas tank and stock your vehicle with emergency supplies and a change of clothes

-Bring patio furniture and garbage cans inside; they could become dangerous in high winds

-Check out https://www.ready.gov/hurricanes to learn more about how to prepare

As the storm approaches, coastal and inland flooding is possible. Be aware of quickly moving water and flooded roads. Do not drive around barricades, or through high water. Pay close attention to the water saturated ground as it can easily cause down trees and power lines in heavy winds.

Know how you’ll communicate with family members and neighbors once the storm passes. You can call, text, email or use social media. Remember that during disasters, text instead of calling because phone lines are often overloaded.

In addition, it is important to prepare now for any possible effects in Delaware from Florence; check emergency kits, know your evacuation routes and continue to monitor weather reports. Should it become necessary for emergency shelters to be opened, locations will be announced at that time.
