Troopers Investigating Threat to Indian River High School

Dagsboro–  The Delaware State Police are investigating a school threat aimed at Indian River High School, located at 29772 Armory Road, Dagsboro, DE.

On March 9, 2020, the Delaware State Police was made aware by the Indian River School District that a student had made written threats aimed at the High School.  Further investigation into this incident revealed that a 14-year-old Indian River High School student had made written threats in a journal specifically targeting the high school.  The student had not been in attendance at the school since mid-January 2020.

The case continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police with charges pending.

The Delaware State Police are continuing to work with the Indian River School District Administration and there is no concern for public safety or threat to the high school at this time.

“When made aware of the threats, the counseling staff at Indian River High School immediately notified the school resource officer and building administrators so that the incident could be investigated,” Indian River School District Superintendent Mark Steele said. “As a result, there is no immediate threat to the school. I want to commend the staff of Indian River High School for their timely actions in addressing this situation. This is still an active Delaware State Police investigation and the district will have no further comment at this time.”

ATV SAFETY and RESPONSIBLE RIDING

With the recent stretch of unseasonably warm winter weather the Delaware State Police have seen a sharp increase in the number of illegal and unsafe OHV (Off-highway Vehicles) and ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) related complaints. As we move in to the spring season we can foresee this activity not only continuing but increasing.

While the majority of ATV operators are responsible and comply with State law, there are those who not only create unsafe situations for the public and themselves, but affect the quality of life in our communities.

If you are an owner/operator please make yourself familiar with the laws pertaining to the legal and safe operation of these vehicles. Specific laws pertaining to OHV’s can be found on the State of Delaware website at: (http://delcode.delaware.gov/title21/). Refer to Title 21-6801 and 21-4191A.

Information can also be found on the Delaware Department of Motor Vehicles website at: (http://dmv.de.gov/services/vehicle_services/reg/ve_reg_ohv.shtml).

The most basic and general facts are that OHV’s cannot be operated on any state roadway and that permission to operate them on private property must be authorized by the property owner. Keep in mind that even with permission to utilize private property all operators must comply with parking and noise related laws.

Delaware State Police Troop 4 Presents a “Year in Review” to the Communities We Serve

Georgetown- The Delaware State Police Troop 4 Administration, led by Captain William Crotty, hosted its 2019 annual year in review on March 11, 2020 at the Millville Town Hall, located at 36404 Club House Road, Millville.

Troopers were privileged to have hosted a meeting where the public was provided with an overview of the great work done by the men and women of DSP Troop 4 in 2019.  Achieving a 49.7% reduction in robberies, a 8.5% reduction in burglaries, and a 13.8% reduction in pedestrian related crashes simply exemplifies the exceptional work the Troopers are doing.  Moreover, the dedication of the Troopers at Troop 4 is clearly shown by their 14.6% increase in proactive drug arrests and a 34% increase in proactive DUI arrests, making these both the highest on record for Troop 4 Patrol.

Those in attendance also had the opportunity to learn about the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and the duties and responsibilities of those Troopers assigned to that unit.

Equally important to our crime fighting and traffic enforcement measures is our commitment to suppress and prevent crime through our community outreach and engagement efforts.  In 2019, Troop 4 embarked on several community based programs to build trust, open lines of communication, foster positive and open relationships between the citizens and police, all aimed at crime reduction and making our communities as safe as possible.

Some of the most memorable Community Outreach events in 2019 included:

  • Community Café on August 30, 2019 at the Oak Orchard Diner located at 31507 Oak Orchard Road, Millsboro.
  • 4th Annual Trunk or Treat Event
  • Operation Winter Warm Coat Drive Collection
  • Community Café on December 5, 2019 at the Frankford Public Library located at 8 Main Street, Frankford.

These pro-active efforts not only provide the community with a better understanding of the Delaware State Police, it also enhances Troopers awareness of the various cultures that exist within the communities we so proudly serve.
