Troopers Investigate Crash Involving Train-Dagsboro

Dagsboro– The Delaware State Police have charged a Georgetown man for driving under the influence after he struck a train.

The incident occurred on Monday, October 8, 2018 at approximately 11:04 p.m. when Troopers were dispatched to Dagsboro Road and Train Lane, for a report of a vehicle striking a train.  Upon arrival, Troopers observed a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, that had attempted to cross the railroad crossing when its left headlight area struck one of the train cars.  The operator of the train was able to bring the train to a stop after the collision.

Upon contact with the driver of the Silverado, 48-year-old David L. Sayre, an odor of alcohol was detected.  Sayre was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to the Beebe Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the train, a 46-year-old man from Berlin, Maryland and his 48-year-old male passenger from Crumpton, Maryland did not sustain injuries as a result of this crash.

Sayre was issued a traffic citation for the following:

  • Driving a Vehicle Under the Influence
  • Failure to Have Insurance Identification

The roadway was closed for approximately one and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Troopers Arrest Wilmington Man for Vehicular Assault – Bear

Bear – The Delaware State Police have charged Felix R. Matias, 32, of Wilmington, with multiple criminal and traffic related offenses, to include vehicular assault and DUI, as a result of a serious crash that occurred early Monday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m., Monday, October 8, 2018 on DE Rt. 72 (Wrangle Hill Rd.) east of DE Rt. 71 (Red Lion Rd.) in Bear. A 2006 Mazda 6, operated by a 22 year old New Castle was traveling DE 72 eastbound and a 2003 Ford Explorer being driven by Matias, was traveling DE 72 westbound. Matias failed to remain in his lane and crossed over into oncoming traffic, with his vehicle striking the front left end of the Mazda. After impact both vehicles came to rest in the roadway. Matias attempted to flee on foot, but was taken in to custody a short distance from the scene by a New Castle County Police Officer with the assistance of a civilian bystander.

The operator of the Mazda was transported to the Christiana Hospital in critical condition. Neither improper driving nor impairment are being considered as factors on his behalf.

Matias was admitted to the Christiana Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Impairment on his behalf is being considered as a contributing factor in the crash.

A 26 year old male passenger in Matias’ vehicle was also transported to the Christiana Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Warrants are currently on file charging Matias with the following offenses, which he will be arraigned on upon discharge from the hospital:

  • Vehicular Assault 1st Degree (2 counts)
  • Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol
  • Failure to Report a Personal Injury Accident
  • Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident
  • Failure to Remain in Lane
  • Disregard a Traffic Control Device
  • Driving without a License
  • No Proof of Insurance
  • No Proof of Registration

 

DE Rt. 72 was closed for approximately one hour as the scene was investigated and cleared.

Troopers Investigating Shots Fired Incident-Milton

Milton, Delaware– The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a shots fired complaint that occurred late last night.

The preliminary investigation has determined the incident occurred at approximately 11:00 p.m., Saturday, October 6, 2018 when the occupants of the residence in the 27,000 block of Martins Farm Road, Milton heard a loud bang. A search of the residence was conducted and nothing suspicious was seen or located. The next morning 9-1-1 was called and troopers were dispatched to the residence after a bullet hole was located in the residence. Troopers contacted a 59-year-old man and 52-year-old woman who were in the residence at the time of the incident. No one was injured in this incident.

*Update* Troopers On-Scene Of Helicopter Crash-Bridgeville

Bridgeville, Delaware- The Delaware State Police are currently on the scene of a helicopter crash which occurred at the Evans Produce Farm located at 9843 Seashore Highway east of Bridgeville, Delaware.

The preliminary investigation thus far has determined the crash occurred today, Sunday, October 7, 2018 at approximately 1:37 p.m. when a 1981 Enstrom FA28C with approximately 15 gallons fuel on board took off from behind the Evans Farms Fall Festival. The pilot, 62 of Bridgeville, reported the aircraft lost power as he cleared the irrigation and electrical lines and proceeded east approximately 300 yards before making a hard landing into the adjacent soybean field.

There were four people on the helicopter including the pilot. There were no injuries reported.  The three passengers included a female passenger, 41 of Lewes and two children 7-year-old and 4-year-old were transported by Bridgeville EMS to the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital for precautionary reasons.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were contacted and are en-route to the scene. This is currently being investigated the Federal Aviation Administration.

Troopers On-Scene Of Helicopter Crash-Bridgeville

Bridgeville, Delaware- The Delaware State Police are currently on the scene of a helicopter crash which occurred at the Evans Produce Farm located on Seashore Highway (SR 404) today, October 7, 2018 at approximately 1:37 p.m.. Initial report stated no injuries, however recently advised three passengers were transported to a local area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.  This investigation is in its early stages and more information will be released as it becomes available.

Troopers Arrest Suspects for Multiple Robberies and Weapons Charges-New Castle

New Castle – Delaware State Police have arrested two suspects for armed robberies and another suspect on weapons charges.

Troopers began investigating an armed robbery that occurred at approximately 10:56 p.m., Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at the Pizza Hut located at 1508 Beaver Brook Plaza, New Castle. A masked suspect brandishing a handgun, approached two employees at the sales counter and demanded money from the register. The victims complied with the demand by turning over an undisclosed amount of cash to the suspect who then exited the business, and was last seen on foot, northbound towards Pine Valley Apartments. The victims were not injured as a result of this incident.

Another armed robbery troopers investigated occurred on Monday, August 27, 2018 at a New Castle area Rite Aid Pharmacy at approximately 2:37 a.m., located at 2034 New Castle Avenue, New Castle. An armed suspect entered the business brandishing a handgun and confronted an employee at the sales counter. The employee then complied with the suspects demand for money by turning over an undisclosed amount of cash. After the employee provided the money to the suspect a struggled ensued between the two over possession of the firearm, at which time a round was fired in to the ceiling. After discharging the firearm the suspect fled the business via the rear door. There were no injuries as a result of this incident.

Through investigative measures Maria Simpson and David R. Ramirez were generated as suspects and on October 2, 2018 detectives from the robbery unit executed a search warrant at Simpson’s residence. Warrants were issued for David R. Ramirez for the Rite Aid Pharmacy. On October 5, 2018, Ramirez was observed driving near the Christiana Mall where he parked his vehicle and entered the food court. A short period later, Ramirez and an unknown male exited the food court and walked to Ramirez’s vehicle. Prior to entering the vehicle both were taken into custody. The unknown suspect with Ramirez was later identified as Elliot S. Colon, 24 of Orlando, Florida. Colon was found to be in possession of a loaded Kel Tec 9 MM handgun equipped with a silencer and an obliterated SN, numerous rounds of ammunition, an extended magazine, masks, gloves, and dark clothing. Colon was convicted of possessing a controlled substance in Florida in 2015 and is prohibited from possessing a firearm.

A search warrant was executed on the Honda Accord. The Honda Accord contained a loaded Ruger 9 MM handgun equipped with a silencer and an obliterated SN. Additionally the vehicle contained evidence linking the suspects in the Rite Aid robbery.

Elliott S. Colon, 24 of Orlando Florida was charged with Possession of a Firearm by Person Prohibited, Possession of ammunition by Person Prohibited, Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, Possession of a Destructive Weapon (silencer), and Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number. Colon was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in default of $50,000.00 cash bond.

David R. Ramirez, 28 of New Castle was charged with two counts of Robbery 1st degree, two counts Reckless Endangering, Possession of a Firearm During Commission of a Felony, Conspiracy 2nd degree, Wearing a Disguise during Felony, Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, Possession of a Destructive Weapon (Silencer), and Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number. Ramirez was committed to Howard R. Young in default of $226,000.00 cash bond.

Maria D. Simpson, 31 of New Castle turned herself in to Troop 2 and was charged with two counts of Robbery 1st, Possession of a Firearm During Commission of a Felony and Conspiracy 2nd degree. She was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on $65,000.00 unsecured bond.

State Police Investigating Industrial Accident-Harbeson

Harbeson, Delaware – The Delaware State Police are investigating an industrial accident that claimed the life of a Bridgeville man.

On October 5, 2018, at approximately 8:54 p.m., troopers were dispatched to a CPR in progress at the Allen Harim Chicken Plant located at 18752 Harbeson road for an industrial accident involving an employee with serious head trauma. The preliminary investigation has determined, a 59-year-old employee was seriously injured as he and another employee attempted to change the battery on a pallet jack. The new replacement battery was secured in an electric hoist. While the battery was being lowered via the electric lever the corner of the new battery got hung up on the corner of another battery that was sitting stationary next to the jack. The employee was leaning forward in attempt to manually guide the new battery onto the jack away from the obstruction. After the new battery cleared the obstruction it continued to lower in a downward motion. The horizontal block portion part of the hoist struck the employee. The employee was transported by EMS to the Beebe Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Detectives are continuing their investigation. There are no signs of foul play. The body was turned over to the Delaware Division of Forensic Science. The name of the victim will not be released as is DSP practice when investigating these types of industrial incidents.

Troopers Investigating Fatal Crash-Milford

Milford– The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a fatal crash that occurred earlier this afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:17 p.m., on Friday, October 5, 2018, when a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville was traveling northbound in the left lane of SR 1 (Bay Road) south of the Thompsonville Road exit ramp, north of Milford. A 2016 Toyota Rav-4 was also traveling northbound in the left lane of SR 1, directly in front of the Pontiac Bonneville. The operator of the Bonneville failed to give full time and attention to the roadway and the front of his vehicle collided with the rear of the Rav-4, while both vehicles were in motion traveling northbound. This collision caused the driver of the Rav-4 to lose control and cross the grass median into the southbound lanes of travel. A 2006 GMC Yukon was traveling southbound in the left lane on SR 1. The front of the Rav-4 struck the front of the Yukon, in a near head-on collision. The force of this collision caused the Yukon to enter into the right travel lane of southbound SR 1. A 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling southbound in the right lane of SR 1 and was struck on the left side by the right side of the Yukon. The collision caused the Grand Marquis to exit the right side of the roadway and strike a utility pole with its front end. Following the chain-reaction collision, the Bonneville continued northbound and came to a controlled stop within the center grass median. The Rav-4, after being struck by the Yukon, rotated slightly counter-clockwise and came to an uncontrolled stop near the yellow divider line of the southbound lanes of SR 1. The Yukon came to a stop on the grassy shoulder of SR 1.

The passenger of the Mercury Marquis, 75-year-old female of New York, was transported by EMS to the Kent General Hospital and later succumbed to her injuries sustained in this collision.

The driver of the Pontiac Bonneville, Shane R. Fenimore, 28 of Millsboro, was not injured. A computer check revealed he had an active capias warrant from the Sussex County Court of Common Pleas. He was taken into custody and transported to the court. The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.

The driver of the Toyota Rav-4, 52-year-old male of Rehoboth Beach was transported and admitted to the Milford Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. His passenger, 46-year-old male of Millsboro, was also transported to the Milford Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the GMC Yukon, 47-year-old male of New Jersey, was transported to Milford Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. His passenger, 53-year-old-female of New Jersey was transported to Milford Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mercury Grand Marquis, 76-year-old-male of New York, was transported to the Kent General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was admitted.

All drivers and passengers were wearing their seat belts.

The roadway in the area of the crash was closed for approximately two hours while the investigation was completed and the roadway was cleared.

Identification is pending notification of next of kin and extended family.
