Wilmington Man Apprehended after Committing Shoe Store Robbery – Wilmington

Wilmington – The Delaware State Police have arrested Mark D. Goldberg, 57, of Wilmington, in connection with the robbery of a Fairfax area shoe store that occurred Friday afternoon.

At approximately 2:50 p.m., Friday, January 11, 2019, Troopers were dispatched to the Payless shoe store located at 2105 Concord Pike, in reference to a robbery. The first Trooper arrived on scene within three minutes, and was able to confirm that a white male suspect, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, with the hood pulled up over his head, and a navy colored wool coat, approached an employee at the sales counter, implied he had a weapon and demanded cash. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of money the suspect fled in an unknown direction.

The description of the suspect was broadcast to other units and at approximately 2:55 p.m. an assisting New Castle County police officer located a subject matching the suspect description at the Circle K gas station, located at 1801 Concord Pike. The subject, later identified as Goldberg, was taken in to custody without incident. Further investigation was able to confirm that Goldberg was the subject who committed the robbery. A subsequent search of Goldberg produced evidence further linking him to the crime.

Goldberg was transported to Troop 2 where he was charged with one count each of Robbery 1st Degree and Wearing a Disguise during the Commission of a Felony. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #2 and then committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $66,000.00 secured bail.

Troopers Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash – New Castle

New Castle – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 9:58 p.m., Thursday, January 10, 2019 on U.S. 13 in the area of Federal School Lane.

The initial investigation has determined that a 2014 Chrysler Town and Country operated by a 47 year old Bear man was traveling southbound in the right lane of U.S. 13, just north of Federal School Lane. A 54 year old male pedestrian had entered the roadway from an unknown direction and was struck by the right front of the Chrysler. After impact the pedestrian came to rest in an adjacent private driveway. The Chrysler came to a controlled stop in the same area. There are no marked crosswalks nor pedestrian crossing signals in the area where the collision occurred.

The pedestrian who was pronounced deceased on scene was not wearing any reflective clothing nor was he carrying a light. Impairment on his behalf is undetermined at this time. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Chrysler was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured. Neither speed nor impairment are factors on his behalf.

U.S. 13 southbound, between Saienni Blvd. and Federal School Lane was closed for approximately 2 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

Troopers Involved in Pursuit with Wrong Way Driver- I-95 Wilmington

Wilmington – The Delaware State Police are currently conducting a joint investigation with the Pennsylvania State Police in reference to the pursuit of a vehicle that was driving the wrong way on I-95.

At approximately 7:19 p.m., Wednesday, January 9, 2019 a 911 call was received by Delaware State Police dispatchers that a vehicle was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-95, in the area of Martin Luther King Blvd., Wilmington. Responding Troopers first observed the vehicle, which was identified as a dark colored Ford SUV, in the area of the Churchman’s Rd. exit, at which time they activated there emergency equipment and attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle refused to stop and continued to travel southbound in the northbound lanes before entering into Delaware Service Plaza. The vehicle then turned around and began traveling I-95 northbound, now in the northbound lanes, still refusing to stop.

Upon encountering heavy traffic in the area of Harvey Rd. the vehicle traveled across the grass median and then continued northbound in the southbound lanes of I-95. As the vehicle approached the Pennsylvania state line, Pennsylvania authorities were notified. It was also at this time that the Delaware State Police helicopter obtained visual contact with the vehicle. Pennsylvania State Police units engaged the vehicle just south of Chester and assumed the lead position with Delaware Troopers assisting. The vehicle continued northbound before becoming disabled after being involved in a collision with a Pennsylvania State Police vehicle, just south of the Philadelphia International Airport. The driver exited the disabled vehicle and attempted to flee but was taken in to custody by Pennsylvania Troopers after a short foot pursuit.

The driver, identified as 29 year old Kyle R. Merena, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania was transported to an area hospital for evaluation.

Warrants are currently on file charging Merena with Reckless Endangering 1st Degree and Disregarding a Police Officers Signal, along with multiple traffic related offenses.

Troopers Investigating North Wilmington Gas Station Robbery

Wilmington – The Delaware State Police are investigating the robbery of a north Wilmington Exxon station that took place Monday night.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m., Monday, January 7, 2019 at the Exxon located at 5301 Concord Pike, Wilmington. A male suspect approached an employee at the sales counter while brandishing a can of pepper spray and demanded cigarettes. The employee complied with the demand and turned over multiple cartons of cigarettes to the suspect who then exited the business and fled in an unknown direction.

The suspect was described as a black male, 30-35 years of age, 6’00” tall, average build, wearing all dark clothing to include a knit cap.

*UPDATE* Troopers Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash – North Wilmington

Wilmington – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 5:19 p.m., Monday, January 7, 2019 on Philadelphia Pike just north of Beverly place, Wilmington.

The initial investigation has determined that a 1986 Chevy Caprice, being driven by a 51 year old Wilmington man was traveling northbound in the right lane of Philadelphia Pike, north of Beverly Place which is just north of Marsh Rd. A 58 year old Wilmington man was attempting to cross Philadelphia Pike in an undetermined direction when he was struck by the front right corner of the Chevy and thrown to the pavement, where he came to rest. The Chevy came to a stop just north of the spot of the collision.

The pedestrian who was pronounced deceased at the scene, was not utilizing a crosswalk, was not wearing any reflective clothing nor carrying a light. Impairment on his behalf is undetermined at this time. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Chevy was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured. Neither speed nor impairment are factors on his behalf.

The northbound lanes of Philadelphia Pike were closed for approximately 3 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

*Update -Victim’s Name Released* Detectives Conducting Homicide Investigation-Dover

Dover-  The Delaware State Police are releasing the name of the victim who was involved in the shooting during the reported home invasion at Kentwood Mobile Home Park as 30-year-old Jesse Stanford of Cambridge, MD.

The incident occurred on January 5, 2019 at approximately 5:57 p.m. when Troopers were dispatched to the 200 block of Kentwood Drive, Kentwood Mobile Home Park for a report of a home invasion and shooting.  Upon arrival, it was discovered that a 30-year-old male had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Stanford was transported to a local area hospital in serious condition where he succumb to his injuries last evening.

Wilmington – The Delaware State Police are on scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 5:19 p.m., Monday, January 7, 2019 on Philadelphia Pike in the area of Marsh Rd.
Philadelphia Pike northbound is completely closed and traffic southbound is restricted to one lane. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel.

Troopers Investigating Knifepoint Gas Station Robbery – Wilmington

Wilmington (19808) – The Delaware State Police are investigating the knifepoint robbery of a Wilmington area gas station that took place early this morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:16 a.m., Monday, January 7, 2019 at the Valero gas station located at 1327 McKennan’s Church Rd., Wilmington. A male suspect with has face concealed and brandishing a knife, confronted an employee behind the sales counter and ordered him to open the register. The employee complied with the demand by opening the register at which time the suspect removed an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect also took multiple packs of cigarettes before exiting the business where he then entered into an awaiting vehicle which was parked at the entrance doors. The employee was not injured as a result of the incident.

The suspect was described as a white male, 20-25 years of age, 5’7” tall, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, light colored pants and a cloth covering his face. He entered the front passenger seat of a dark gray Chevy Malibu, bearing an unknown Delaware tag, which was being driven an unknown suspect.

Troopers Investigating Home Invasion/Shooting- Dover

Dover (19901)–  The Delaware State Police are investigating a report of home invasion in which one individual was shot last evening.

The incident occurred on January 5, 2019 at approximately 5:57 p.m. when Troopers were dispatched to the 200 block of Kentwood Drive, Kentwood Mobile Home Park for a report of a home invasion and shooting.  Upon arrival, it was discovered that a 30-year-old male had sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Further investigation revealed that two unknown suspects had entered the residence.  Upon the victim being shot, both suspects fled the scene.  There were two other adult individuals in the residence during this incident.  Both individuals were not injured.

The 30-year-old victim from Cambridge, MD was transported to a local area hospital in serious condition.

The suspects fled the residence without obtaining any property.
