Troopers Investigating Shore Stop Robbery- Milford

Milford- The Delaware State Police are investigating a robbery of a Milford, DE Shore Stop that occurred last evening.

The incident occurred on December 10, 2019 at approximately 8:29 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the Shore Stop located at 1885 Bay Road Milford, for a report of a robbery. Upon arrival, Troopers met with a male employee who advised that a subject approached him with their hand in the pocket of their sweatshirt and asked for “everything” he had. The suspect obtained an undisclosed amount of cash prior to fleeing the area on foot. No weapon was displayed and no direct threat was ever made by the suspect. The employee did not sustain injury.

The suspect was wearing a disguise covering their face and a dark colored hooded sweatshirt.

Troopers Investigating Attempted Armed Robbery of Liquor Store-Frederica

Frederica– The Delaware State Police are investigating the attempted armed robbery of a Liquor Store and are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the pictured suspect.

The incident occurred on December 5, 2019 at approximately 7:29 p.m., when Troopers responded to the JC Liquor Mart, located at 7615 Old Beach Road Frederica, for a report of a robbery. Upon arrival, Troopers met with a 71-year-old male employee who advised that the suspect entered the store wearing a ski mask. The employee immediately confronted the suspect when the suspect displayed what appeared to be a handgun. The suspect then proceeded to strike the victim with the handgun. The suspect and victim engaged in a tussle. The suspect subsequently fled the area on foot without obtaining any money or merchandise. The victim sustained minor injury and declined medical treatment.

The suspect was described as black male, approximately 6’02’’ tall and at least 200 lbs. He was wearing a ski mask, gloves, a dark green puffy winter jacket with fur lining on the hood and jean pants.

Troopers Investigating Fatal Pedestrian Crash – Newark

Newark – The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred at approximately 8:52 p.m., Tuesday, December 10, 2019 on DE Rt. 273 (Christiana Rd.) in the area of Harmony Rd., Newark.

The initial investigation has determined that a 2018 Mazda 3, operated by a 21 year old Bear man, was traveling westbound on Rt. 273 west of the intersection with Harmony Rd. in the left lane. A 31 year old Newark woman was crossing the westbound lanes of Rt. 273 from north to south on foot and proceeded directly into the path of the Mazda at which time she was struck. After impact the pedestrian was thrown into the eastbound lanes of Rt. 273 where she came to rest. The Mazda came to a stop and remained at the scene.

The female was transported to the Christiana Hospital where she was pronounced deceased. The investigation determined that at the time of the incident she was wearing dark clothing with no reflective material, not carrying a light and not utilizing a marked crosswalk. Impairment on her behalf is undetermined at this time. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.

A 31 year old male subject who was crossing the roadway along with the female victim was not injured.

The driver of the Mazda who was properly restrained, was not injured. Impairment on his behalf is not a factor in the crash.

Rt. 273 was closed between Harmony Rd. and Brownleaf Rd. for approximately 3 hours, while the scene was investigated.

Delaware State Police Issues Scam Alert Advisory

Delaware- The Delaware State Police are issuing a scam alert advisory when selling items online.

Fake checks drive many types of scams – like those involving phony prize wins, fake jobs, mystery shoppers, online classified ad sales, and others. In a fake check scam, a person you don’t know asks you to deposit a check – sometimes for several thousand dollars and usually for more than what you are owed – and wire some of the money back to that person. The scammers always have a good story to explain the overpayment – they’re stuck out of the country, they need you to cover taxes or fees, you need to buy supplies, or something else. But by the time your bank discovers you’ve deposited a bad check, the scammer already has the money you sent, and you’re stuck paying the rest of the check back to the bank.

Here’s how the scam works:

The buyer offers to purchase the product being sold, but at the last minute makes up an excuse why he needs to write the check for more money than the cost of the item and asks the seller to wire (Western Union / Money Gram) the excess money back to the buyer.
The seller agrees, deposits the check, wires the money and ships the goods or physically gives them to the buyer.
A week or so later, the seller’s bank tells him the check bounced because it was a fake, so the seller’s bank account now owes the bank for the amount, AND the police may arrest the seller (for check fraud, counterfeiting, etc.)

This scam works because most people believe that a cashier’s check is as good as cash. That’s clearly not true if it is a counterfeit! With today’s computer and printer capabilities, almost anyone can make a very realistic looking fake check. People also don’t realize that wired money is immediate and irretrievable.

How you can protect yourself against check scams when selling something:

Call the issuing bank identified on the check, to verify the check is good and for that amount.
Don’t give the buyer the sold property, whether it is a car, DVD’s/CDs or anything else, until the check has had time to clear. If the buyer wants it immediately, ask for cash or see your bank for other methods, like a wire transfer that can be verified more quickly.

Troopers Investigating Armed Robbery- Millsboro

Millsboro- The Delaware State Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred last evening.

The incident occurred on December 9, 2019 at approximately 9:59 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to a residence in the 31000 block of Karen Street, Millsboro for the report of a robbery. Upon arrival, Troopers met with a 59-year-old male resident who advised that while he was outside in the front yard, he was approached by an unknown subject. The suspect displayed a handgun and struck the victim with the handgun, causing the victim to fall to the ground. The suspect demanded the victim empty his pockets. The suspect obtained the victim’s wallet, cell phone and keys prior to fleeing the scene. Shortly after the incident, the victim’s bank card was utilized at the Exxon in Seaford. The victim did not sustain injury.

The suspect was described as a black male in his late 20’s, approximately 5’08” tall, 175 lbs., with a full beard, and wearing all dark clothing.

Christiana Mall Incident Unfounded – All Stores Operating as Normal

Newark – At approximately 5:45 p.m., this evening there were unfounded reports of an incident occurring at the Christiana Mall. Multiple Troopers who were already on site working a holiday detail immediately determined that there was nothing occurring within the mall or surrounding sites. There was no evacuation or interruption to normal operations within the mall complex. All businesses are operating as normal. Any reports to the contrary are false.

Troopers Attempting To Locate Wanted Suspect Dionederik Godwin- Selbyville

Selbyville– The Delaware State Police are seeking the public’s assistance in attempting to locate 37-year-old Dionederik R. Godwin (photo: 2007) of Bishopville, MD, who is wanted in connection with a domestic related incident in which he displayed a firearm.

The incident occurred on December 7, 2019 at approximately 4:19 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the 29000 block of Poplar Court, Hickory Tree Apartments, Selbyville, for a report of a male subject with a gun chasing another male subject. Upon arrival, Troopers learned that Godwin responded to his 31-year-old ex-girlfriend’s residence where he engaged in an argument with her and her 40-year-old boyfriend. Godwin entered the residence when he made contact with the male victim first and began to challenge him, and then proceeded to pull out a handgun. Godwin then proceeded to push his ex-girlfriend and strangle her. The male and female victim were able to exit the residence when Godwin proceeded to chase the male victim while displaying the firearm. Godwin then swung the firearm and subsequently struck the male victim. During this incident, there were five children in the residence ranging from ages 4 to 13. There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident.

Godwin fled the area in a black pickup or SUV style vehicle, possibly a Jeep with NJ registration, prior to police arrival. He currently has active warrants out of Troop 4 for the following:

Possession of a Deadly Weapon During the Commission of a Felony
Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon
Strangulation
Aggravated Menacing
Endangering the Welfare of a Child (5 counts)
Offensive Touching (2 counts)

Troopers have been unable to locate Godwin who is presumed to be armed with a handgun. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Dionederik R. Godwin is asked to contact Troop 4, Tpr. J. Troopers Make Annual Holiday Visits

During the week of December 2nd, the Delaware State Police, with the support of the Delaware State Troopers Association (DSTA), made their annual holiday visits to schools and hospitals throughout the state.

Troopers had the honor of escorting Santa and Mrs. Claus, Miss Delaware 2019 Hillary May, the Princesses from Pursuit for Peace, along with other beloved characters, as they interacted with the children, in the hopes of spreading some holiday cheer.

In New Castle County, a visit was made to the Nemours/Alfred I. du Pont Hospital for Children, where lunch was provided to the children and their families, courtesy of the DSTA, Bacchetti Brothers Catering and Mission BBQ. During the luncheon, the children were able to play games and make holiday crafts, provided by the hospital’s Child Life Department, as well as having the opportunity to visit with Santa.

Troopers then escorted Santa and his friends, as he delivered gifts to patients in their rooms, who were unable to attend the luncheon. In all, over 200 patients received an early Christmas present, provided by the Child Life Department and the Delaware State Police Museum and Education Center. This marks the 22nd year, that the Delaware State Troopers Association has sponsored the Troopers visit to the hospital.

In Kent County, Troopers escorted Santa and his friends to the Secret Garden Day Care, the Kent County Community School and the Charlton School.

In Sussex County, visits were made to Morris Elementary School, as well as the Howard T. Ennis School in Lincoln, the Stockley Center in Georgetown and the Sussex County Consortium in Lewes.

While these visits are intended to bring smiles to the faces of the children, there is no denying that the Troopers who participate, receive an equal amount of joy in return.

These visits are just another way that the Delaware State Police strives to accomplish their intended mission of: “Enhancing the quality of life for all Delaware Citizens and visitors by providing professional, competent and compassionate law enforcement services.”

Newark, Delaware – The Delaware State Police are seeking the public’s help in locating 25-year-old Afrika Whaley of Dover after she escaped from a constable in Newark.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:03 p.m. today, December 7, 2019, as Afrika Whaley fled after being transported by a Bay Health Security Constable to the Rockford Center located at 100 Rockford Drive Newark, Delaware.

Afrika Whaley is described as a dangerous black female with short hair wearing blue scrubs and red shoes. She is currently wanted by the Dover Police Department for Assault (felony), Conspiracy and Resisting Arrest.
