Frederica – The Delaware State Police in conjunction with the Milford Police Department has arrested a man in connection with multiple robberies, shopliftings and theft charges.

The first incident occurred on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at approximately 11:07 p.m. when Troopers responded to the Canterbury Shore Stop located at 8953 South DuPont Highway in Felton for a report of a shoplifting complaint.  Investigation revealed that a white male subject entered the store and asked for two cartons of Newport cigarettes.  When the store clerk placed the cartons on the counter, the subject grabbed them and ran out of the store.  It was later determined that Milford Police had recently handled a similar incident in their jurisdiction.  With their assistance and through video surveillance footage, the suspect was identified as 26-year-old Douglas F. Coppock of Frederica.

The second shoplifting incident occurred on Thursday, November 15, 2017 at approximately 9:16 p.m. when Troopers responded to Uncle Willies, located at 12984 South DuPont Highway in Felton for a report of a shoplifting complaint.  Investigation revealed that a white male subject requested to purchase one carton of Newport Short Cigarettes.  When the store clerk placed the carton on the counter, the subject grabbed the carton of cigarettes and fled out the front entrance of the store.  Through photographs and video surveillance footage, Douglas Coppock was again identified as the suspect.

On Tuesday, November 16, 2017, Troopers responded to Coppock’s residence in the 100 block of West Front Street in an attempt to serve a warrant.  Coppock was located upstairs in the residence and was taken into custody without incident.  Coppock was charged with two counts of Shoplifting, two counts of Conspiracy Second, unrelated charges including; Theft, Theft By False Pretense, and Falsifying Business Records, and multiple unrelated charges out of Milford Police Department.  He was transported to Troop 3 where he was arraigned out of Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to James T. Vaughn Correctional Center on $22,0000 secured bail.

Wilmington (19802) – The Delaware State Police are currently investigating an attempted armed robbery of a Wilmington area restaurant that occurred early Saturday morning.

The investigation thus far has determined that the incident happened on Saturday November 18, 2017 at approximately 6:25 a.m., as a male suspect entered Lucy’s Pizza and Restaurant located at 3840 North Market Street.  The suspect ordered a drink at the counter and paid cash.  As another customer exited the store, the suspect walked around the counter and pointed a handgun at the female clerk, but didn’t make any statements.  The clerk immediately fled to the rear of the business while the suspect ran out the front door without any merchandise or cash.  The suspect was seen entering a light colored car and drove eastbound on East 39th Street.  The female clerk was uninjured in the incident.

The suspect was described as a black male, 30-40 years of age, 6’00”-6’02” tall, 190-200 lbs.  He was last seen wearing a light colored hooded sweatshirt, dark colored pants, dark colored mask over his face (no further physical or clothing description available).  Armed with an unknown type handgun.

Ellendale- The Delaware State Police have arrested a Lincoln man after he was found to be operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol for the 6^th time.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:24 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, 2017 as a Trooper was traveling southbound on DuPont Boulevard (US 113) north of West Robbins Road and observed a Chevrolet Malibu pulled over on the shoulder of the roadway with its flashing lights on.  The trooper pulled behind the vehicle to check on the occupants.  Contact was made with the operator, Kervy E. Riley, 53 of Lincoln, and an odor of alcohol was detected.  A DUI investigation ensued and Riley was taken into custody and transported back to Troop 4.  A computer check revealed Riley had five previous DUI convictions, making this his 6th arrest.

Kervy Riley was charged with 6th Offense Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Driving After Judgment Prohibited, and Driving While Suspended or Revoked.  He was arraigned at JP3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $11,500.00 secured bond.

Slaughter Beach – The Delaware State Police are currently investigating an incident in which shots were fired at a residence last evening on Bay Avenue.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m., Saturday, November 18, 2017, at a residence in the 400 block of Bay Avenue.  The homeowner contacted 9-1-1 after he heard gunshots outside and when he went to investigate, he noticed a bullet hole in the front door of his residence.  The homeowner was not injured as a result of this incident.

At this time there are no suspects.

Bridgeville – The Delaware State Police have arrested a Greenwood man after a traffic stop revealed methamphetamine in the car.

On Saturday November 18, 2017 around 10:00 p.m., a trooper on patrol in the area of Sussex Highway (US13) and Newton Road when a 2004 Jeep Cherokee was observed with an inoperable front headlight and rear tail light.  A traffic stop was conducted on the SUV and contact was made with the operator and three passengers.  A search was subsequently conducted on the vehicle which revealed .2 grams of methamphetamine as well as equipment and component mixtures of the manufacturing stages of Meth along with key ingredients in making the drug.

A passenger seated in the rear of the vehicle where the drugs were located was identified as  Jody L. Souva, 35 of Greenwood.  He was transported to Troop 5 where he was charged with Operating a Clandestine Laboratory, Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance (Meth), Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  He was arraigned at JP3 and released on $8,000.00 unsecured bond.

The operator of the vehicle was cited for the inoperable headlight and tail light.  The other two passengers were not charged.

Detectives assigned to the Delaware State Police Sussex County Drug Unit, with the assistance of DNREC, responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. No evacuations were ordered as it was determined that there was no immediate hazard to nearby residents.  The right lane of US13 southbound was closed for approximately one hour.

New Castle – The Delaware State Police are investigating a serious pedestrian crash that occurred on US13 yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 5:28 p.m. Friday November 17, 2017 in the area of South DuPont Parkway (US13) southbound and Old State Road when a 35-year-old male was attempting to cross US13 from west to east.  A 2006 Ford Explorer being operated by a 58-year-old male was southbound on US13 in the left lane and was unable to see the pedestrian and struck him with the front of the vehicle.  The Explorer was able to come to a controlled stop after the collision.

The 35-year-old male pedestrian from the New Castle area was wearing dark-colored clothing and not carrying a flashlight, was treated on the scene by New Castle County Paramedics and transported to Christiana Medical Center where he was admitted in critical condition.

The 58-year-old male operator of the Explorer, from the New Castle area, was properly restrained and uninjured in the crash.

Traffic on the southbound lanes of US13 were impacted for two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

“Troopers remind pedestrians to use caution and safety when walking on or near roadways. If you must cross a roadway utilize appropriate cross walks and make sure to look left, then right, then left again before proceeding.  When walking near a roadway always make yourself visible to drivers by wearing bright/light-colored clothing and reflective materials.  Pedestrians that are walking at night must carry a flashlight for added safety.”

Tips for pedestrians:

• Wear reflective clothing, a blinking light or use your cell phone’s flashlight.
• Use a cross walk.
• Be focused. Be aware of your surroundings and not distracted with your cell phone.
• Walk on the sidewalk when available, not the shoulder. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible.
• Never assume a driver sees you. Make eye contact with drivers as they approach you to make sure you are seen.
• Never walk under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Tips for drivers:

•  Look out for pedestrians everywhere, at all times. Safety is a shared responsibility.
• Use extra caution when driving in hard-to-see conditions, such as nighttime or in bad weather.
• Slow down and be prepared to stop when turning or otherwise entering a cross walk.
• Yield to pedestrians in cross walks. Never pass vehicles stopped at a cross walk. There may be people crossing that you can’t see.
• Follow the speed limit, especially around people on the street.
• Never drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
