Troopers Investigating Crash Involving Overturned Box Truck – Wilmington

Wilmington – Delaware State Police are investigating a minor personal injury crash involving an overturned box truck that occurred this morning at approximately 6:15 a.m., Sunday, June 24, 2018, on SR 141 southbound in the area of Boxwood Road west of Wilmington.

The road will be shut down for an extended period of time as the Department of Natural Resources is en-route due to a ruptured gas tank. At this time traffic is being diverted onto Boxwood Road.

Motorists can expect delays in the area and are advised to seek alternate routes of travel.

*UPDATE* TRAFFIC ADVISORY* Fisher Road south of Route 9 Closed Due to Crash-Milton

Capture

Milton, De. – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a vehicle crash involving a Delaware State Trooper that occurred today south of Milton.

The preliminary investigation has determined the crash occurred at approximately 12:22 p.m., Saturday, June 23, 2018, as patrol units from Delaware State Police Troop 7 were actively searching for a burglary suspect reported to be a white male on a bicycle with a thin build, approximately 20 to 30 years old, in the area of the Lazy Lake and Hunters Mill Estates communities. Recent video surveillance of a burglarized residence supported the description information.

The trooper, operating a fully marked 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe police vehicle, was traveling northbound on Fisher Road (CR 262) approaching the intersection of Lewes-Georgetown Highway when he located a man riding a bicycle southbound matching the suspect’s description. The Trooper turned around and activated the emergency lights and siren in an effort to get the subject to stop however he refused and continued to travel southbound on Fisher Road. The trooper ordered and directed verbal commands toward the suspect to stop. The suspect ignored numerous verbal commands and continued to flee. As the pursuit of the suspect continued the two vehicles were involved in a collision.

The suspect, a 32 year old male, was transported to Beebe Medical Center by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased.

The trooper, properly restrained at the time, was not injured in the collision. The 28 year old trooper has been employed by the Delaware State Police for four years and is assigned to Troop 7 patrol in Lewes, DE. He has been placed on administrative leave per Divisional Policy, pending the outcome of the investigation.

This crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Fisher Road south of Lewes-Georgetown Highway south of Milton was closed in the area of the crash for approximately four hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

Wilmington – Delaware State Police are investigating a serious crash involving a motorcycle that occurred at approximately 2:42 p.m., Saturday, June 23, 2018, on route 141 southbound in the area of Alapocas Drive, north of Wilmington.

As a result of the crash, SR 141 southbound is closed in the area Alapocas Drive. Motorists can expect delays in the area and are advised to seek alternate routes of travel.

Dover – The Delaware State Police conducted a graduation ceremony today to acknowledge Cadets Benjamin Conrad, Caroline Silverman and Larissa Ward at the Delaware State Police Museum located at 1425 North DuPont Highway, Dover, Delaware.

The ceremony began with Human Resources, Sergeant Kristin Smith presenting the 2018 Cadet class and welcoming family and friends to this notable event. The ceremony was attended by the Executive Staff, Captain Jon Wood, Director of Human Resources, Master Corporal Rickey Hargis and Senior Corporal Robert Colmery of the Delaware State Police Community Outreach Unit, Corporals Adam Jewell and Tyler Wright of the Delaware State Police Human Resources Section, Sergeant Richard Bratz, Director of the Public Information Office and Trooper First Class Chase Lawson of Troop 6.

The class was recognized by the keynote speaker, Superintendent of the Delaware State Police, Colonel Nathaniel McQueen Jr., Lieutenant Colonel Monroe Hudson, and Operations Officer for New Castle County, Major Melissa Zebley and Operations Officer for Special Units, Major Daniel Meadows. They presented formal certificates for successful completion of the 2018 Cadet Training Program held at the Delaware State Police Training Academy which took place from June 18th to June 22, 2018.

“Congratulations to the Cadets for completing this program and for their leadership and commitment to the citizens of Delaware. In addition, thank you to all of the instructors and participants that contributed to a successful Cadet program.” Colonel Nathaniel McQueen, Superintendent of the Delaware State Police

The Cadet Trooper’s primary duties will include the enforcement of handicap parking and fire lane violations; however they are also used in various administrative duties such as traffic control at large events and foot patrol at the State Fair. The Cadets completed 40 hours of mandatory classroom instruction and will be assigned to various troops throughout the state. Since the program began in 1998, the Delaware State Police have hired 69 Cadet Troopers; 22 of those cadets have been hired as Delaware State Troopers.

In a personal note, from Sergeant Kristin Smith, to each Cadet “It is my distinct pleasure to congratulate you on your outstanding participation and completion of the 2018 Delaware State Police Cadet Program! I applaud you on your hard work and you should take great pride in your accomplishments. I encourage you to continue representing the principles of leadership and wish you continued success in all your future projects; DSP Strong!”

Some of the classes for Cadet Troopers during the week of education and training were; Motor Vehicle Code, Cultural Diversity, Officer Safety, Weaponless Defense, Verbal Judo, Radio Procedures, Uniform and Equipment, Ethical Decision Making, Laws of Arrest, Drug Recognition, Emergency Care, Auto Theft Investigations and Courtroom Procedures.

Minimum Qualifications to become a cadet includes:

  • Education- Candidates must be a Delaware resident and currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at an accredited college in the state of Delaware (full-time or part-time)
  • Age- Candidates must be between the ages of 18-21
  • Citizenship- Candidates must be a citizen of the United States
  • Driver’s License- Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license

  • Anticipating to begin employment in June 2018
  • Current Pay is $13.04 per hour

Selection Process includes:

  • A formal State of Delaware application
  • An Oral Board Interview
  • Polygraph Examination

Troopers Arrest Wilmington Man for Indecent Exposure

Wilmington (19808) – Delaware State Police have arrested a Wilmington man for indecent exposure after he was observed committing a lewd act while in plain view of a passing motorist.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:25 a.m., Tuesday, June 19, 2018 as a 48 year old Wilmington woman was driving past a residence in the 3500 block of Newport Gap Pike, Wilmington. As she passed the residence she observed a white male, later identified as David L. DiTonno, 64, totally nude and in the process of committing a lewd act. The woman became alarmed and immediately called 911.

Upon Troopers arrival at the residence, which was confirmed to be DiTonno’s home, he was observed sitting in a chair in his open garage, totally nude and in plain view of the public roadway. At the time he was taken in to custody he admitted that he was attempting to gain attention from women in the area.

DiTonno was transported to Troop 6 where he was formally charged with one count each of Indecent Exposure 2nd Degree and Lewdness. He was then arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court #2 at which time he was placed on pre-trial supervision and released on $500.00 unsecured bail.

Troopers Arrest Felton Man on Burglary Charges-Greenwood

Greenwood-The Delaware State Police have arrested a Felton man on burglary charges after he was observed breaking into a garage.

The incident occurred on Thursday, June 14, 2018 at approximately 8:28 a.m. when Troopers were dispatched to the 13000 block of St. Johnstown Road for a report of a burglary in progress called in by a neighbor.  Upon arrival to the residence, Troopers located 34-year-old, Jesse A. Nichols hiding in the garage area.  It was learned that Jesse’s stepfather currently lives at the residence and Jesse has not lived there for the past 3 to 4 years.  Jesse was taken into custody without further incident.

It was later discovered that Jesse had entered the same property on June 6, 2018, and stole several items, including a jewelry box, cuff link, and a Colman cooler.  These items were later recovered from Jesse’s vehicle.

Jesse was transported back to Troop 5 where he was charged with Burglary 3rd, Burglary 2nd, and Theft (Felony).  He was arraigned before the Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $1,495.00 cash only bond.

Delaware State Police Troop 6 to Host Community Café

Community-Cafe

Wilmington –  Delaware State Police Troop 6 will be holding a Community Café on Friday, June 29, 2018, beginning at 10:00 a.m., at The Well, located at 6949 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin. Community members will have the opportunity to meet and interact with the commanding officers from Troop 6, as well as the Community Outreach Trooper. This Community Café is often referred to as “Coffee with a Cop” in other police agencies and is being held in an effort to build a stronger relationship between the Delaware State Police and the communities that we so proudly serve.
