New Castle County – The Delaware State Police are investigating a recent rash of vehicle break-ins that have taken place throughout New Castle County during the first half of May. These break-ins have taken place in the parking lots of retail locations as well as hotels/motels through the greater Newark and New Castle area.

While similar crime patterns have occurred in the past they typically involved unsecured vehicles or vehicles with valuables in plain view. However these most recent break-ins involve secured vehicles where the property was concealed out of plain view. The suspects are smashing windows and then rifling through the vehicle in the hopes of finding something of value.

Based on this mode of operation Troopers are encouraging everyone to remove all valuables from your vehicle whenever possible. Simply securing them in the glove-box, center console or under a seat does not ensure their security.

Outside of this most recent trend the Delaware State Police would like to still offer the  following basic tips to help prevent our area residents from being victimized:

1. Keep your doors to all of your vehicles locked at all times and windows shut.
2. Do not leave items of value in your vehicle. This includes purses, wallets, credit cards, electronics, check books, money, SS card, loose change, documents and paperwork with your personal information listed.
3. Store valuable tools inside your residence. If needed daily for work, create an easy system to load and unload daily, such as, using storage containers to transport.
4. Your glove box should remain locked, and should only store your registration and insurance cards.
5. Do not store your vehicle title in the glove box. Store it with other important documents inside your residence.
6. Do not leave items that are perceived as valuable in plain view, such as, a laptop case with no laptop.
7. Clear the vehicle of all clutter and personal items.
8. Do not keep a spare vehicle key hidden in the same vehicle. Do not store house keys or other keys in your vehicle.
9. If possible, keep your vehicle parked in a well-lit area that you can viewed from your residence.
10. If you have a surveillance security system, include your vehicles in the angle of your camera system.

If you observe a suspicious subject on your property, do not confront them, call 911 immediately. Also, be a good witness for your neighbor, as you would want them to do the same for you. Pay attention to what is going on in your neighborhood, and report suspicious activity.

Lewes- The Delaware State Police are currently conducting a death investigation related to a boating accident that occurred yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred on May 19, 2019, at approximately 3:49 p.m. when units were dispatched to the Angola Beach Marina located within the Angola Beach Mobile Home Park, Lewes, in reference to a death investigation related to a boating accident.

The investigation revealed that at approximately 10:00 a.m., two friends were traveling in a 16’ aluminum Jon boat.  While traveling in the Bay, returning from the area of the Inlet, their 16’ boat was capsized by the suspected combination of choppy seas and wake from two passing boats.  As a result, the two passengers were ejected from the boat into the Bay.  They were both able to obtain life vest and hold on to the partially submerged vessel.

It was reported that after being in the water for some time, one of the passengers lost consciousness for unknown reasons.  A passing boat observed the two in distress and was able to transport them to the Angola Beach Marina.

The victim, a 73-year-old male from Laurel was pronounced deceased at the scene.  His name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin and extended family.  The Delaware Division of Forensic Science was contacted to remove the victim and to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

New Castle– The Delaware State Police have identified the name of the driver who was killed in a vehicle crash on May 18, 2019 on S. Dupont Highway (US RT 13)  just north of Federal School Lane, as 30-year-old Jonath K. Chapman of Newark. 

The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

Magnolia- The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a shooting that occurred late last evening.

The incident occurred on May 19, 2019 at approximately 10:46 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the 500 block of Millchop Lane, Magnolia for a report of a shooting.  Upon arrival, Troopers located a 38-year-old male victim in the kitchen of the residence with an apparent gunshot wound.

Further investigation revealed that the bullet that had struck the victim appears to have entered the residence, penetrating the kitchen wall and cabinet.  Several bullet holes were also observed on the east side of the residence.

It was reported that an unknown dark colored vehicle was seen fleeing the area with three black male subjects.

The victim was transported by EMS to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.  During this incident there were seven other family members inside the residence, all of whom did not sustain injuries.

This case continues to remain under investigation. New Castle- The Delaware State Police are investigating a shots fired incident that occurred yesterday at a motel.

The incident occurred on May 18, 2019 at approximately 6:15 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the Superlodge motel located at 1213 West Avenue, New Castle. Through further investigation is was determined that a resident of the motel, 29-year-old Leovardo Dominguez-Amezquita (no photo available) was highly intoxicated while displaying a handgun in the vicinity of adults and children.  Dominguez-Amezquita continued to play with the gun, waiving it around and racking the slide.  He proceeded  to walk over towards a grassy area near the far side of the parking lot where he fired one round towards a tree.

When Dominguez-Amezquita was confronted by his roommates, he became agitated, punching the motel room window.  He subsequently broke the window causing injury to himself.  He was transported and admitted to the Christiana Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

There were no other reports of injuries as a result of this incident.

Warrants have been obtained for Dominguez-Amezquita upon his release from the hospital charging him with the following:

• Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony
• Reckless Endanger First Degree (4 counts)
• Criminal Mischief

New Castle (19720)- The Delaware State Police are investigating the armed robbery of a BP Gas Station that occurred last evening.

The incident occurred on May 18, 2019 at approximately 8:33 p.m., when Troopers were dispatched to the BP Gas Station located at 1 Jay Drive, New Castle, for a report of a robbery that had just occurred.  The investigation revealed that a single suspect had entered the business and brandished a knife to an employee at the sales counter.  The suspect demanded the clerk open the cash register.  The employee complied with the suspects demands.  After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect fled the scene on foot.  The employee was not injured as a result of this incident.

The suspect was described as a black male, wearing dark colored clothing, shoes and mask.

Millsboro– The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash involving a single vehicle that occurred early this morning.

The incident occurred on May 19, 2019 at approximately 12:55 a.m., when a 2008 Hyundai Accent was traveling eastbound on Laurel Road just west of Curley Drive at an apparent high rate of speed. The operator failed to negotiate a moderate left curve and drove off the north edge of roadway into a ditch and struck a utility pole.  The operator and sole occupant was ejected from the vehicle following the collision.

The operator of the Hyundai, a 38-year-old male from Seaford was not properly restrained and pronounced deceased at the scene.  His name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

Laurel Road was closed for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident.

New Castle– The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred last evening.

The incident occurred on May 18, 2019 at approximately 8:47 p.m., when a 2005 Acura MDX was traveling southbound on S. Dupont Highway (US RT 13) and entered into a crossover just north of Federal School Lane and came to a stop. The operator of the Acura proceeded to make the U-turn and entered into the left lane of US RT 13 northbound.  A 2004 Yamaha V6A was traveling northbound on US RT 13 in the left lane of travel.  The Acura entered into the path of the Yamaha and collided with same.  The operator of the Yamaha was ejected onto the roadway following the collision.

The operator of the Acura, a 78-year-old female from Wilmington was properly restrained and not injured.

The operator of the Yamaha, a 30-year-old male from Newark was wearing a helmet.  High speed is being considered a factor on his behalf.  He was transported to the Christiana Hospital where he was pronounced decease.  His name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

US RT 13 northbound was closed at Federal School Lane for approximately 3 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident.

New Castle-  The Delaware State Police are currently on scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 8:47 p.m., May 18, 2019 on S. Dupont Highway in the area of Firewood Lane.

S. Dupont Highway, northbound lanes, between Firewood Lane and Federal School Lane is closed at this time.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes of travel.
